4.0 out of 5 stars Letters from France, 13 Aug 2003
This collection includes Williams's most compelling letters; extracts from her very early letters, written upon her arrival, and extracts from the reign of the evil Robespierre. Williams writes not as a political champion of the revolution but chiefly as a woman which, according to her contemporary critics, was often her downfall. To us though this style, which often intertwines itself with romance and the novel, is attractive and offers an alternative perspective on the events in France. Williams's ability to relate to the French people is admirable. Not only is she a Francophile but in her own way she is also a feminist, putting her female stamp on the masculine domain of politics and revolution. If you like the idea of a woman writing as she wishes and doing as she wishes against
a backdrop of revolutionary fervour, then Williams will win your favour.
