Letters from Wishing Rock is the first novel in the Wishing Rock series, followed by The Wishing Rock Theory of Life and The Tides of Wishing Rock.

What would happen if everyone in town lived in the same building? Ruby Parker is about to find out. Her fiancé has left her and she needs a fresh start, so she moves to Wishing Rock, Washington, a small town on Dogwinkle Island in the waters near Seattle, where she meets a quirky cast of characters who quickly become family. Letters between the neighbors and their friends chronicle the twists and turns of the characters' daily lives. There's Jake, a handsome and charming first-year medical student who catches Ruby's eye from the start, despite his being over a decade younger. Millie, a Wishing Rock resident for forty years, runs the town's library, post office, newsletter and grocery store, knows everyone and everything, and shares the history of the area with her playful wit. World traveler and psychic Alexandra bestows insight and wisdom with humor and compassion, and Ruby's Gran heads to the United Kingdom, heeding her own advice to seize the day. And then there's Ed; if something fun is going on, the grandson of the town's founding father is likely at the center of it. Amidst all this action, Ruby manages to find passion and companionship, but will she be able to open her heart to love?

Online dating, a group trip to Scotland, a discussion about dogwinkles, a fateful hoedown, and friendships old and new, all interspersed with recipes from some of the town's best cooks, make Wishing Rock come alive in this delightful and insightful look at life, love, relationships, and community.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wishing I lived there! 2 Dec 2012
By S J M
Format:Kindle Edition
I received this book as a giveaway in exchange for an honest review.
The story was written in the form of texts, emails and letters between the residents and friends of the community of Wishing Rock. What I liked about this book was the format in which it was presented - the short sections made it easy to read. I loved Millie's `on a completely separate note' sections of her newsletter as these always made me smile, and also the descriptions of Ruby's experiences of internet dating. These seemed so true to life and, for me at least, echoed some of my own experiences. Overall a lovely book, the recipes looked good, although I didn't try them myself. I'd recommend this book as the perfect read for lazing on the beach (or even just curled up at home) as it's a light, but enjoyable read. I look forward to reading the new instalment about the residents of Wishing Rock. 4 star

5.0 out of 5 stars I Want to Live in Wishing Rock 2 April 2011

Letters from Wishing Rock: a novel with recipes
I loved this book.
The community of Wishing Rock may be small, but obviously, they are never boring.
A story told through the letters, texts, and emails, I found my self yelling at some of the characters, "DON'T go to her house! I want to hear the rest of this conversation!"
The humor and general life experiences expressed through out the book by the witty author, Ms. Stucky, made me want to move there, and had me wondering, "Does the manager of the general store need an assistant? I can do that!"
The characters were well and truly developed, indeed.
Thank you Ms. Stucky for this wonderful book. I started reading it again! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read!! 28 Mar 2011

As a child, one of my favorite books was Beverly Clearly's "Dear Mr Henshaw," the story told (as I recall dimly) through a series of letters and then journal entries. In "Letters friom Wishing Rock," Pam Stucky kicks the format into the 21st century with her story being told instead through a series of emails and texts. The story itself is captivating, with a newly jilted Ruby moving into a town on a remote-ish island where everyone lives in the same building and is into everyone else's business. We're led through Ruby's healing and moving forward amongst a cast of colorful characters who will make you laugh and, perhaps even a little, cry. I laughed a lot while I read "Wishing Rock." But even more than the laughter, I deeply appreciated the nuggets of wisdom and philosophy that are tucked within each chapter. When I came to the last page and laid the book down, I walked away with a renewed hope and a desire to live each of my days to the fullest. A word of warning... The recipes included within the text might make you hungry!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read 11 April 2011

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is written in the format of emails between the characters. I wasn't sure what to expect from this approach, but it worked really well. It was a great and insightful was to learn about the characters. I enjoyed following the exploits of Ruby, the young/old single woman in search of a life partner. Because the emails are from different characters, we get to learn the perspective of each individual and how they respond to the same events.

This was a light and amusing story that will make you smile.
