Product Description

Product Description

Vaclav Havel is one of the most important European writers of our time. In 1979 he was sentenced to four and a half years of hard labour for his involvement in the Czech human rights movement, Charter 77. In prison he was allowed to write to his wife, Olga, once a week. He used the opportunity for profound reflections, on theatre, society and philosophy. These letters form a remarkable document, and a work of lasting value.

'From Havel, we learn that the true heroes of our time are those who stay the course.' Bruce Chatwin

I read this book many, many years ago in Norwegian translation,so what I write is out of memory.Let me start to say I never forget this book.It made a big impression on me.
The book gives an excellent look into what was the East-European regimes during the Communist area. That is a reason in itself to recommend this book.
But Havel writes about more than that.He is a philosopher and highly cultivated person. He writes about life, being a human being........
It is a demanding text, sometimes difficult to follow, but it is worth the try.
I recommend this book very much.

I gave my old edition to a friend. Now that I live abroad I will buy the English edition.
It is a book I want to read again and treasure in my library.

Allowed to nominate one recipient for his letters from prison, Havel chose his wife, Olga. The reader journeys with Havel as he comes to terms with the heavy restrictions on prison letters, and finds a way through them from the mundane worries of his driving license renewal to philosophical monologues on his writings, the purpose of his imprisonment and, amazingly, veiled critique of the regime which passes the censor. A very interesting insight into a formative time for this artist turned politician.
