On holiday in romantic Verona, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) explores the city alone as her fiancé (Gael Garcia Bernal) spends his time working. Mesmerized by the wall of letters in Juliet Capulet s Courtyard, she soon befriends the secretaries of Juliet, who diligently answer them every day. When Sophie finds a decades-old, unanswered letter, she responds herself. To her surprise the author, Claire (Vanessa Redgrave), and her uptight grandson (Christopher Egan) arrive and sweep her along on a romantic adventure she could never have imagined...

When I first saw this film I wanted to see it but for some reason it kept being put back on my watch list.

Oh how I wish I hadn't! From start to finish I was caught up in the story, the characters and the gorgeous setting.
I was expecting a basic chick flick with the usual stuff but this film has something that stands out from others, there is something about this film that is relaxing, the characters are calm and Italy is gorgeous. After watching this film I felt the need to visit Verona and this is from someone who isn't eager to travel abroad.

The story is sweet and brings a smile to your face, there are definitely some laugh out loud moments throughout and it will leave you feeling chilled afterwards.

I highly recommend this film to anyone who fancies a chill out with the girls whether you're young or old. My Mum and I sat down and enjoyed this together... not that I'm saying my Mum is old!

You can't blame this film for being predictable or cliched: it's what rom-coms are, and after one look at the synopsis, you can easily guess what is going to happen. Amanda Seyfreid plays Sophie, a New York newspaper fact-finder keen to showcase her real talent, writing. She and her chef fiance, Victor, have organised a pre-wedding holiday in Tuscany. The cracks in their relationship are visible early on- her fiance is wrapped up in his own career, isn't really interested in her and sadly neglects her on holiday, leaving her to wander solo around Verona. It is here she discovers what she thinks will make the perfect story for her journalistic debut- the letters to Juliet, written by love-lorn tourists seeking advice from Juliet. Sophie soon learns that a group of local women answer each and every letter, and she discovers a fifty year old letter that has lain unanswered, from a young girl, Claire, who has abandoned her first love, Lorenzo. Sophie decides to reply, hoping her reply reaches Claire. It does, and Claire, now an elegant older woman (played by the divine Vanessa Redgrave), sets out to find Lorenzo with Sophie's help, accompanied by her reluctant and ridiculously priggish but handsome grandson Charlie (Christopher Eagan), who resents what he sees as Sophie's meddling and thinks the whole thing can only end in tears. As they set out to identify Lorenzo from a multitude of namesakes, the animosity between Sophie and Charlie eventually grows to respect and their chemistry is undeniable.

So yes, the plot is far-fetched, but it is really lovely escapism, as many of the best rom-coms are. The cinematography is beautiful, as is the scenery.

Amanda Seyfried and Vanessa Redgrave have a magical quality about them that is absolutely essential in a film like this. All the male actors are also well cast, but it is very much a girls' film. It is a lovely romance for both the younger and the more mature lady, whose paths cross so beautifully in the story. Set in Tuscany, at the height of summer, what more could you wish for. The colour and music that infiltrates the scenes is so therapeutic that you want to be transported to this more gentle, everyday life.

I really wanted to see this on the grounds of it being the first english speaking role for huge Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal. Bear in mind I'm not completely impartial to 'chick flicks' so I don't base my disappointment on it being a bit of a girly movie. I feel like the first half hour of the movie doesn't kick things off so great. Gael's character in the movie is pretty boring and forgettable. Chemistry between him and Amanda Seyfried doesn't seem to exist. I couldn't help but feel a little sad he chose such a lacklustre and mediocre role for his english language debut. If you want to see the movie on the same grounds as myself I'm sure you will also be disappointed.

However, when the characters of Charlie and his grandmother, Claire are introduced [about a half hour in] the movie gets a little bit more interesting. And you can't help but get caught up in the story as the trio trek across the beautiful landscape of Italy in search of long lost love.

Overall it was a nice, if slightly predictable story to see once. One to rent over buying in my opinion. Not a great 'chick flick' for guys.

Pure escapism on an afternoon alone and a glass of your favourite tipple. Yes the ending was cheesy but failing that, the film was intended for the romantic at heart. Is it possible to meet the love of your life again after 50 years, who knows but sometimes, just sometimes, we all just need to escape life! I loved it.

Ever since Mean Girls, I really liked Amanda Seyfried - so I'm delighted that she finally made it as a leading lady. Really loved her in this film and the setting is so breathtaking that I'd move there in an instant!

I recently went to see this film and I found it an absolute delight. The storyline was really good - usually I find films like this fall a bit flat in the middle but this one kept my attention all the way through. It is now on my christmas list so that I can watch it again when all the men are out and I'm having a girlie night in.
