Product Description

Product Description

This work presents the most important calligraphic treasures from the Sabanci Collection, a private trove that includes Ottoman calligraphy dating from the 15th to the 20th century. It displays the work of nearly every important Ottoman calligrapher and all major types of the art. Included here are illuminated Korans and prayer manuals, decorated albums of calligraphic exercises, and "levha" - large-scale lettered compositions that were framed as decorations. In addition, there are 11 royal edicts, or "Ferman", each surmounted by the sultan's imperial monogram.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, 29 April 2003
This is a wonderful book, the best I've ever seen on Arabic calligraphy - Arabic in the sense of calligraphy in the Arabic letters. Unlike most Western books, it doesn't spend its time looking at illumination or tugras but the illustrations rather concentrate on the calligraphy itself. My Bahraini and Syrian calligraphy teachers thought Ottoman calligraphy the pinnacle of Arabic calligraphy, and after this book you may well agree. This book has an excellent introduction covering the work, training and equipment of an Ottoman scribe, and a good coverage of Ottoman Turkish terminology. A model book that I hope someone will use as a model for books Persian, Arabic and Urdu calligraphy.

This review is from: Letters in Gold: Ottoman Calligraphy from the Sakip Sabanci Collection, Istanbul (Metropolitan Museum of Art) (Hardcover)
This is a truely delightful book. It covers the development of Islamic calligraphy during the Ottoman era dedicating a page or two to each calligrapher, his life and works. The introduction discusses the calligraphy tradition including materials, methods and the manner of teaching.

This is an beautiful and inspirational book, far better than most books on the subject.
