A MUST BUY!!! 23 Sep 2007
Format:Hardcover
I came across this book only because of the movie's release. Whilst I'm openly not a fan on articles of a military nature, I was amazed that this book is purely about human emotion in times of conflict. Ms Kumiko Kakehasi san's research for her first book for me paid off no end. In some parts I truly wanted to cry from the letters that were being sent from a devoted father, loving husband and Friend of the West to his family about the massacre before him.

I can wholly recommend this to students and fans of the film alike. I know for during my studies I will refer back to this and wonder how such a sad time in history could stay so fondly in my heart.

Arigato Kakehasi san.

Very moving 27 Aug 2008
Format:Hardcover
Like one of the other reviewers, I too picked this up at the airport whilst passing time. I had also seen the film recently which prompted me to buy the book. Every now and then you find a book that you start and read virtually in one go. This is one of them. The film was excellent but the book really brought the message home. Having been brought up on a diet of 'war comics' in the seventies and films from the same era, I had this perception the stereotype 'banzai' Japanese fanatics who have no feelings. It was an experience to discover the 'human' side of General Tadamichi Kuribayashi and his men and found the extracts from their letters sad and moving. A very well researched book by Kumiko Kakehashi and a heartbreaking story.

What a great read 6 Aug 2008
Format:Hardcover
I came across this book in an airport book shop while trying to put in a few hours. I saw the film a shortly before so that's what got me interested.
The author gives you an insight into what those men faced on that little island in the middle of nowhere, and how their leader faced the reality of the task in hand. I don't think any amount of words could really sum it up. Gives a new meaning of 'fight to the death'.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has even the slightest interest in military history as it will get the hairs standing on the back of your neck! Wow!
