Book Description

4 Nov 2011
One of Hull's most important modern poets, Norah Hanson's graceful, intelligent writing has been delighting readers for the past decade. Now, for the first time, a selection of her work has been collected in a single volume - one that will be enjoyed by established poetry fans and the uninitiated alike, in 2011 and for many years to come.

Whether reflecting on the past, through derelict landmarks and absent friends, confronting present-day 'domestic dilemmas' with wit and good-humour, or looking to the future through the eyes (and extraordinary energies) of her grandchildren, Norah remains unswervingly honest, entertaining and inventive. Love Letters & Children's Drawings is poetry at its very best constantly insightful, compelling, and in our opinion, essential.

Norah Hanson has produced a searching collection; exploring the Hull of her youth with insight and humour. Then, a couple of the poems have us soaring - A Breath Of Silence is a masterpiece about walking and, the epic I Make Myself Blind has to be one of the best poems about loss I have read. I have heard Norah read this a couple of times at gatherings and it is stunning.
