Samuel Marsden is credited with the start of it all.
This book adds another perspective to the arrival of the Pakeha in North Island, all the more appropriate in view of the forthcoming Bicentennial in December 2014.
For Marsden never stayed long, and the hard grind of cross cultural contact, language learning and actually living on the Island was carried out by others.
As we don't have written Maori records of the time, these letters fill in some gaps from others' accounts, flatly contradict some of the received wisdom over the years about the value of and progress of teaching literacy and other 'civilised' skills and above all brings out the humanity of bold pioneers,who underwent perils and hardships.
