A fascinating and delicious treat for dreamy, introspective readers of all ages. (Books for Keeps )

A delightful and slightly off the wall collection. (Manchester Evening News )

About the Author

Toon Tellegen is one of Holland's most celebrated writers for both children and adults. He started his literary career as a poet, and began writing for children in the mid-1980s. In his dreamlike animal stories, Toon explores his fascination with the incomprehensible and unpredictable side of human behaviour. A G.P. for many years, he now writes full time from his home in Amsterdam.

Jessica Ahlberg, daughter of the acclaimed author/illustrator team, Janet and Allan Ahlberg, studied fine art at Winchester College and has gone on to illustrate several books for children. She likes, among other things, writing letters, looking at maps, reading books, doing DIY and making cakes. She lives in Brighton and loves walking by the sea and sometimes swimming in it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Psychadelic or what? 20 Aug 2009
By Mr. Dk Hamm VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Whimsical is not the word for this collection of letters between various animals. The whole thing is surreal.

It reads like a children's book but is obviously aimed at adults. I note that the author is Dutch. I wouldn't dream of suggesting that he has visited the cafes in Amsterdam before writing this but I'm sure that much of his material comes from the subconscious.

An entertaining read but not the sort of thing I would want to read on a regular basis.

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming Tales 1 Aug 2009
By J. S. Bundy VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This delightful book is a collection of letters sent between various animals and delivered with unerring accuracy by the wind.

The stories centre on friendships, emotions and relationships and in just a few paragraphs can paint an extremely vivid picture. My two favourites were Squirrels letter to his table and Penguins sad letters to all the creatures of the world.

I found my self thinking about The Little Prince as I read the book, not from any philosophical point of view but from the charming whimsical nature of the tales. Some of which are quite off the wall!

I think that one can also take away some good pointers in how to write or respond to a letter or gift, particularly if its a cake!

The review copy I was sent did not have the illustrations in it but judging from the dust jacket the finished product will have delightful pictures of all the animals as they write, that can only enhance the finally published book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming and surreal 27 July 2009
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a charming book which children will love. Adults reading it to them will probably get something out of it as well as it can be read at several different levels.

There are short stories included as well as letters. The elephant wants to dance with the snail and the bear wants everyone to hold parties and invite him to them, but there must be lots of cakes especially honey cakes. I loved the story where the ant and the bear are at a party and the bear eats all the cake. The elephant is forever falling out of trees or off things even when he tries positive affirmations. The squirrel eventually finds a solution to the problem. The ant writes his memoirs and goes to sleep on top of a pile of letters sent by the squirrel.

In this fantasy world you have to be careful with letters because the wind picks them up and delivers them even if you've decided you don't want them sent. For an adult this is a quick read but I enjoyed it and found it worthwhile.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit funny, and a lot bizarre - Not for little kids
I quite like bizarre, imaginative things, but with this little book, Tellegen often strays too far down the line of magic realism and may have left many of his confused audience... Read more
