A simply sublime return for the a-ha front man. This album was all of what I expected from his previous offerings. A lot smoother in production and mature in tone. The songs vary from uplifting, soaring melodies to submissive, gentle reflection. An easy listen and a rewarding buy, showing off the bredth and range of his voice.

If you come looking for a pop album, look somewhere else. A-ha it ain't ...

Letter from Egypt is an exquisite work of thoughtfulness and care brought to us by one of the most distinctive voices on the scene today. Morten's first solo album was just over twelve years ago, with 1995's Wild Seed, but fate intervened in the years and a-ha regrouped in 1999, producing three albums in the years since. Now, Morten has once again taken the proverbial drivers' seat and shown us his creativity, both as a lyricist and a musician in this solo work. Letter from Egypt seems to be direct follow-up to Wild Seed and after a few listens, one can deduce the spiritual and curious side of Morten as he pushes the proverbial envelope in crafting some beautiful ballads (Letter from Egypt, A Name is a Name, With You - With Me) as well as some decidedly rockable hits (Darkspace, Send Me an Angel, Movies) all along using his voice as an instrument, hitting the highs, finessing the lows and massaging every note inbetween. As with a fine hand-crafted wine, this album has been well worth the wait.

This is going to be a personal favourite. The stuff Morten produces just gets better and better. This was well worth waiting for.I can not fault a single track the whole package is fantastic. All i can say is like a fine wine or a mature cheese and vintage port ....this stuff is so mellow and haunting and unforgetable ....hopefully there will be many more to review.....

This cd unfortunately hasn't had the airplay it deserved, and as all a-ha fans in the uk know anything released by these three stupendously talented norsemen, just does not get the time and energy devoted to it by the uk's music and media industry, it really is very puzzling.
Anyway, when I 1st put it on the song "darkspace" I'd heard from Morten's myspace page, just lifts you up and transports you to somewhere else and there is not a song out of place here either. My personal favourites are "there are many ways to die", a haunting and curious song that touches your soul in an unexplained way; "Should the rain fall" which is beautiful in its simple way of saying I will still be here no matter what happens to me. I adore "Anyone" a sublime love song to a girl (of course) and "with you" an instantly memorable tune that stays with you all day.
Morten has shown what an artist he is and master of his craft musically, lyrically and I'm pretty sure his artistic vision has been achieved with the production. If he is to leave the music behind and do sculpture as he mentioned he might that would be a pity as not everyone could access his art in that way. I do hope that he continues to write evocative and spellbinding ballads some more.
Anyone who says it's mature I'll agree with up to a point, but somehow that word does it no justice. To describe it as dull I would say to you, have you got ears? I mean really listen to what Morten is sharing with us, yes I understand why you say dull but you are missing the essence, yes it's nice but there is a substantial and mysterious filling in this particular chocolate! It's a damn near perfect piece and it helps to settle me and my baby daughter at the end of the day.
Somehow listening to this man's soothing voice is like coming home.

One of those albums that gets better every time you listen to it - and I do!
Atmospheric, heart-rending and heart-warming by turn. Morten's voice has lost NOTHING over the decades - quite the contrary. If it is perhaps not so perfect it is more human and you feel jealous of his wife/lover whoever you are!
Brilliant songwriting at its best.

For those of you familiar with M&S, you'll understand the title of my post....for those that don't, M&S produce quality in everything they do!
My hubby bought this for me for Christmas and I played it in the car whilst doing the various Chrimbo visits and I was quite simply lost in the music on the first run through. It is a beautiful album and only reaffirms my love for Mr Harket's voice. IMHO, no-one can touch his vocal ability and it saddens me how under-rated he is in the UK music industry, on the whole. If you love a-ha the you'll love it, but if you don't love a-ha, I still think you'll love it. Simply beautiful.

Letter from Egypt

I liked this album on the first play and by the third I really loved it. Beautiful voice as ever, and moving lyrics. Would recommend to any Morten/A Ha fans.

I usually stay clear of solo albums as I find they are not as good as the main bands albums. For example, Dave Ghan`s solo efforts while good are not as amazing as Depeche Mode albums.
However, my craving for more A-ha and in particular,Mortens fabulous voice, led me finally to purchase Morten Harket`s Letter from Egypt (and Wild Seed) and I`m glad I did too.
While It (they) might not be quite as good as any of the A-ha albums, for the time being at least,as I wait in vain hope of an A-ha reunion... It`ll do me.
The one criticism I do have however regards the mastering level. On Wild Seed the mastering is spot on with very good dynamic range. On this album though the level is way too high and while it sounds immediately impressive it can sound tiring to the ears after a while, especially if listened too directly after Wild Seed or any other dynamic album.
It seems the mastering engineer was trying to win the loudness War.An all too common problem at the moment.Maybe if we all voted with our wallets this practice might eventually stop. That of course would mean no new music for a while and in this case no more Morten Harket... The record companies have us over a barrel it would seem!
