From 1946 until 2004, he explained the Americans to the British through his weekly Letter 'From America', the longest-running one-man series in broadcasting history. In this volume, Cooke reports on a varied selection of events, including the 1992 presidential election, the art of Charles Schulz and introducing Bernstein to Handel's Messiah. Format:Audio CD
Cooke delivers benign, wise, beautifully constructed essays on the ways of the world, and in particular the United States during a large part of the Twentieth Century. The "Letters" remain an entertaining and thought-provoking listen, and do not date even when the subject matter is by now relegated to the history books. Thoroughly recommended to discerning listeners.

Only Alistair Cook could be as mesmerising talking about Snoopy the Dog as about the Cuba Missile Crisis. Played this in the car when holiday took us out of range of Radio Four. This is when the BBC was at its best.
