I've tried several Lao courses over the years and this is the best as an introduction. It's clearly laid out and has good basic grammar and 'useful phrases' sections as well as a comprehensive word list. Also it does at least have a - very short - CD. I'd like a bit more help with the script because of the endless problem of competing transcription systems but it does use the Lao script and the author has a helpful website if you want to pursue this. But it's only a short guide and definitely 'does what it says on the tin'.

This book is very good but the only downside is the attached CD, its very basic but sufficient. It could do with a longer talking CD to it. Overall very satisfied.

Great pocket book for learning Lao 23 Nov. 2005
By F. R. Duxfield - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I initially bought this book for the CD which I subsequently found to be very short and not all that usefull. I have however found this to be an excellent book for those wanting to learn Lao. The Phrasebook section has sufficient phrases to get you by at first and the grammar section is good for those wanting to go a little further. The dictionary contains more useful workds than other pocket phrasebooks and as well as containing the words, contains expressions and clarifiers in the dictionary which are very useful. The English phonetic spelling of Lao words is also very good

A Fabulous Small Book and CD! 17 Aug. 2009
By Traveller - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Like the only other review of this small book...I am finding it to be incredibly useful, well organized, well thought out. I personally have failed to learn how to speak Russian, French, German, Spanish, and Chinese, though my Portuguese is merely hideously terrible...So I understand the process of trying to acquire language skills.

This book is good, including in one slim volume chapters on punctuation, sounds, phrases and an adequate Lao/English Dictionary. The CD is tiny, but well produced and burn yourself a normal sized CD when you first get the book and (tiny) CD. Great stuff...I feel empowered for my next trip to Laos...and that's all a book like this can give you.

Bravo to Mr. Higbie, the author.

(I would also lastly note that I only paid $10.19 for this Book and CD from Orchid Press....I'm not sure why a much higher price is listed. However, now that I have this set, I would have gladly paid more for it).

Best Wishes, Traveller
