Book Description

From the writer/compiler of Communication Link, Signs Make Sense and the LET'S SIGN Series comes a new big dictionary of over 1300 BSL (British Sign Language) signs. This fully illustrated book consists of 192 comb-bound A4 pages.

The familiar format and descriptions are combined with fresh new drawings and include an Introduction that explains; the importance of facial expressions and body language; how to produce negative and positive statements and question forms; sign variations; representative handshapes (classifiers); how some signs can change in context (directional verbs).

The work has been done in collaboration with BSL tutors needing up-to-date materials to support Level 1 Courses and provides fuller details of sign production for those using the LET'S SIGN & WRITE BSL graphics software.

There are also sample pages that MAY BE COPIED as reminder sheets arranged in TOPICS to suit Beginner, Foundation and Level 1 Courses and for schools and families. These include animals, weather, greetings and introductions, family, relationships and occupations.

The Left and Right Handed Fingerspelling Alphabets can also be copied.

Contains 2500 word INDEX.

From the Publisher

This book, by the writer and compiler of Communiction Link (1998) and Signs Make Sense (1990), was created in 2004 to replace and update these earlier publications.

This is the 1st edition of the Let's Sign Dictionary and now this book in its turn has been updated and replaced - by Let's Sign Dictionary Everyday BSL for Learners 2nd Edition Revised & Enlarged - published in June 2009 and also available on amazon.co.uk

The 2nd Edition contains 2,400 signs and is also ordered alphabetically with headings of meanings and captions to describe movements.

The Introduction explains the importance of non-manual features, question forms, sign variations, classifiers, directional verbs and other crucial BSL features. 14 pages arranged in topics that may be copied as handouts.

The work is informed by BSL users nationwide and provides an excellent collection of sign vocabulary for all those teaching and learning BSL.

* An established reference for BSL Level 1 and 2 courses
* Practical and accessible to families, baby-signers, schools and services
* Supported by the Let's Sign Series of BSL educational materials
* Appealing to learners of all ages and abilities, deaf, hearing and to support learners with specific additional language and communication needs

The sign graphics contained in the 2nd Edition are also available in Let's Sign & Write V3 software pack for teachers and families to make their own materials - published by Widgit Software.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book to use alongside Deaf tuition, 5 Dec 2005
A great little find at a great price.
The book is best used alongside tuition with a Deaf Teacher and is great to use out of class as a memory aid. The Dictionary contains many Sign words and all are easy to understand. It would not be easy to teach yourself sign from this book as it doesn't cover Deaf sentence structure and also contains regional sign variations, but like I said I am finding it very useful as a reminder of what was taught in class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 27 April 2009

This is an excellent tool to use when learning BSL. It was one of the first books that I bought and have used it every week. It is laid out in alphabetical order which makes things easy to find and it gives a simple explanation of how to do each sign. When learning BSL most topics use the same sentence structures so only the odd word needs changing about. This book is a really easy way of adding new words into a sentence and building up ur BSL knowledge.

Essential book for Level One learners, although it doesn't have as many signs as you might like. Great for starters.
