Product Description

Murder, mafia and the scramble for money in the new Russia. A brilliantly received satire – achingly funny, deeply disturbing.

‘We can prove Kennedy shot himself – as long as we’re paid in advance.’… In the unfettered freedom of Russia’s new-found venture-capital frenzy, Max Borodin can organize anything – if the readies are ready. That’s why he’s Moscow’s most successful businessman. But Max’s life has its downside: his wife, Tanya, nags him, his mistress, Sonya, exhausts him; and his brother Evgeny is a master at business fiascos. Then there are always the country’s friendly mafia, keen to lend a helping hand with the profits of Max’s Universal Manufacturing Company – producer of documents, historical and otherwise, to suit every conceivable occasion.

Let’s Put the Future Behind Us is the wittiest job of fictional surgery on New Russia since its iron curtain was amputated.

Format:Paperback
Russian gangsters, extremist nationalists and layabouts bring you a hilarious story which is not exactly great Literature but worth a read for the near-farcical closing scenes.

Excellent 7 Jun 2000
Format:Paperback
...Not Cyberpunk like his usual stuff, its set bang up to date in post Glastnost Russia. Nonetheless, fantastic characters, a wealth of information on the life of a fixer, a 'Mr.Johnson' type who smooths the wheels of his Moscow-mafia controlled 'business'. A dark undercurrent of threatened yet rarely revealed stylish violence threads through the read, keeping you on the edge. At the risk of sounding trite, "I couldn't put it down! ". Now, where are those Garibaldis..

I lived in Moscow for eighteen months and, believe me, this is book is spot on! Through the daily dealings of his delightfully idiosyncratic characters, Womack captures perfectly the crazy world of modern Russia and her people.

Sex, drugs, violence, barking mad ultra-nationalists, radioactive Faberge eggs.....sit back with a glass of chilled vodka and enjoy!

**Mind you, I think I read a different book to the one Amazon describes in the synopsis at the top. The second sentence applies, but I don't remember "the Russian Elvis" popping up anywhere. Shame!
