More About the Author

Carole Matthews is the bestselling author of more than 23 hugely successful romantic comedy novels. Her unique sense of humour has won her legions of fans all over the world.

Her latest books, A Cottage by the Sea and Calling Mrs Christmas have both appeared in the top ten of the Sunday Times bestseller list. Her novels Welcome To The Real World and Wrapped Up In You were shortlisted for the RNA Romantic Novel of the Year award. She was also inducted into The Festival of Romance Hall of Fame for her outstanding contribution to romantic fiction.
Carole is a prolific writer of short stories, featuring in several anthologies, and has presented on television. She's also a regular radio guest.

Born in St Helens, Merseyside, Carole has always been an avid reader and dreamed of being a teacher, an air traffic controller, a travel guide or a hairdresser - writer never featured once. Leaving Liverpool for London after a torrid holiday romance in Torquay, she worked as a secretary, an ice-cream lady, a shop assistant and a beauty therapist. It was when she was working in a completely mad holistic clinic that she first thought 'one day I should write a book about this.' She still hasn't got round to it.

Entering a short story competition in Writing Magazine, the first fiction she'd written since being coerced into it at school, Carole - to her and everyone else's amazement - won a thousand pounds! Then - to her and everyone else's amazement - she spent the money, not on shoes and handbags, but on a writing course. The tutor on the course liked what she was writing and recommended an agent who took her on straight away. He sold her first book, which became Let's Meet on Platform 8, a week later.

Previously very unlucky in love, she now lives happily ever after with her partner, Lovely Kev, at Matthews' Towers in the Costa del Keynes. She likes to drink champagne, eat chocolate, bake cake and spends far too much time on Facebook and Twitter.

5.0 out of 5 stars A humourous and poignant story of 'real' people 22 Jun 2001
Let's Meet on Platform 8 materfully combines humour and poignancy - the story is both lighthearted and deep. As a one-time commuter to an area of London close to Euston station the scenes jumped off the page for me and brought back many memories. The plot is sensitively told - a refreshing change from the usual depiction of extra-marital affairs - Teri was no self-centred sordid 'bit on the side' for Jamie. The characters are real people I can easily identify with. The momentum of witty humour was sustained throughout the book. I look forward to reading more of Carole Matthew's work

4.0 out of 5 stars A very real story 11 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Carole Matthew's touched more than one raw nerve in the pages of this touching book. Teri finally finds the man of her dreams, literally collides with him, trouble is his wife found him first. She begins a commuting relationship that leads further. The story allows you to see all sides of the equation, Teri, single and lonely, Jamie who thought he had a happy marriage until he started to question it and Claire, Teri's best friend and casualty of her husbands infidelity. Thats not to mention Jamies wife. If you have ever been a party in this situation you will identify with the feelings of the characters, if not then you will get an accurate insight. As this is not my normal choice of reading I was pleasantly surprised. A book does not need to be hard to read to be worth reading. Very enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny yet touching 3 April 2000
By A Customer
I loved this book. I expected it to be a bit of easy reading for bedtime, you know the type, not much substance but a bit of a time-filler to lull me to sleep....how wrong I was! This book is one of the best I have read in a long time, there were no "Boring bits" to skim over (and believe me, I find that many books have these) and I found it gripping as I agonised with the characters over the dilemma's they faced. I truly did not know which character to side with and by the end of the book I was nearer to tears than I have been in a long time (due to a book anyway!) Fantastic, funny and at the same time, rather sad.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 stars 8 July 2009
By C. Rucroft VINE VOICE
Ok, so I read this book fairly quickly. It's your average chick lit and not to taxing - perfect for reading before bed. I did quite enjoy it and was undecided who I wanted Jamie to choose.
So why the three stars? Well, I just found the whole thing to be a bit cheesy and unrealistic. I mean, who meets someone at a train station, buys them new tights and then escorts them home? I'd think they were a wierdo to be honest. And then before we know it they're jumping into bed together? It just doesn't happen. And then there's Pamela, who rather than fight for her husband, has a 'pretend' affair herself! And then ends up sleeping with him too! I wanted her to fight for Jamie, not just lie down and take it!
I'm aware that chick lit does need the reader to have a bit of imagination, but this was a bit much, even for me. I don't think I'd recommend this to anyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars hmmm started off well... 18 Sep 2007
By amy
I had hoped for a saucy affair but it was more realistic of the turmoils of an affair. It did keep me hooked throughout. I know its a fictional book but I found some aspects too unrealistic and some of the characters a bit wet. I was a little disappointed with this book but I think perhaps I was expecting it to go a certain way. worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Synopsis 8 Oct 2007
By Mary_10
LET'S MEET ON PLATFORM 8: Teri is searching for Mr Right. She's Been through Mr Lazy, Mr Greedy, Mr Completely Selfish and Mr Downright Pervert - but, as yet, no Mr Right. That is, of course, until she's knocked off her feet by Jamie Duncan, as they rush to catch the 18.07 from platform 8. Soon love blossoms and commuting takes on a whole new meaning. But as well as being Mr Right, Jamie is also Mr Married...

A WHIFF OF SCANDAL: When Rose escapes from London and Hugh - devastatingly handsome, intelligent and charming ex-lover - she has no idea that her occupation as an aromatherapist will cause such a scandal in her new country village. All she wants is a bit of peace and quiet, but her weird and wonderful neighbours soon ensure that her life is more complicated than it ever was before. Maybe that's because she's in love again...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, a truly touching story. 29 Mar 1999
By A Customer
This is a really good holiday/bedtime book. If you've ever wondered "what if?" about the stranger on the train, this is for you.
Its the story of a love that cannot be, and the attempts of really believable characters to avoid hurting each other is very moving. One of the few books to make me cry in a very long time. On the other side this book is very funny, with the almost farcial antics involved when the forgotten wife attempts to make her husband jealous by dating her lecherous boss being some of the most comic moments the book has to offer.
A reminder that in real life love is a compromise not a fairy tale. Very real and very touching, I found I really empathised with the characters. So if you want a book to make you laugh and make you cry, then why not give "Lets meet on Platform 8" a chance?

2.0 out of 5 stars Least favourite Carole Matthews book 27 July 2014
By H
Format:Kindle Edition
I was expecting an uplifting read, but to be honest I found this story a tad depressing. I couldn't warm to the heroine, not just because she was having an affair with a married man (who has young children), but because she was less than loyal to her best friend. I couldn't sympathise with the hero's angst - he was a cheat and using the usual excuses (wife didn't understand him, got into a rut etc. etc.). His behaviour forced his wife into doing something she wouldn't have normally done. Matthews uses this as a way to make the wife more understanding of her husband's affair!!! I'd like to say more but can't give away too much of the plot.

Some plus points are that I thought it was well-written, and the end wasn't predictable. But now I need to go and read a cheerier book.
