Product Description

Product Description

There are three types of Japanese script-katakana, hiragana, and kanji. It is possible to read Japanese knowing only a limited number of kanji, but it is not possible with only a limited number of katakana or hiragana-one must know all of them. Let's Learn Hiragana, and its companion volume Let's Learn Katakana, is a textbook that introduces the learner to the basics of one of these fundamental Japanese scripts. Being a workbook, it contains all the exercises that allow the student to master hiragana by the time the book has been finished. Let's Learn Hiragana is a classic in the field, and the huge number of students that have used it successfully is a sign of its preeminence as a self-study guide.

Hiragana in a week 4 Dec 2004
Format:Paperback
This book is excellent. As a complete beginner to the japanese language, I ound this book extremely easy to follow and a great guide to the hiragana. It shows stroke order and stroke endings in perfect detail. I mastered the writing and phrasing of the hiragana in just over a week, putting in a couple of hours work a day. The only thing missing is more tests to really sink the knowledge in, i found myself having to practice away from the book before feeling I had a total grasp. All in all a great introduction to the hiragana. I am now starting the Katakana book from the same series, review to follow.

I spent an hour in the Japan Centre, London, looking for a good kana book. A Japanese friend (with excellent linguistic skills) chose this one for me, as it had everything. It has simple features, clear descriptions, and plenty of space to practice. It shows the kana in context, and there are exercises to help you progress. An enjoyable exercise book. Recommended purchase!

"Lets Learn Hiragana" is possibly the best workbook you can get that covers all the fundamental aspects of basic Japanese writing, and it comes at a price not too heavy on your pocket. If you are thinking of taking up the language then buy a basic self-study course to begin with.
If however you have got a basic self-study kit, then it's probably better for you to head for this book before delving into dictionaries (unless you only plan to speak the language - not write it). The book uses a simple look and copy method, and in between learning every 10 characters or so you have a few exercises to construct/romanize words using the letters you have learned previously in the book.
Besides these two core elements, stroke order for every character learnt is shown along with key grammar points. At the back of the book there are some more exercises and some fun puzzles to work through, including a Japanese wordsearch.
I could not recommend this book more to someone studying Japanese. If you are a school student then you will find this very similar to modular units used in modern language text books, although it is not in colour so it may be dry for some.

Apart from a very few mistakes with Japanese words in the book this is the best on the market.
