I love Marvin and I love this album. I don't think it was Marvin's best but it is a solid album and the first in which Marvin blantantly showcases his sexuality which was always waiting to come out but which marvin had tried to hide. There is of course the classic title track which speaks for itself but my favourite tracks are 'Come get to this' and 'You sure love to ball' which are amazingly sexy songs and marvins voice just sounds divine on them. Other notable tracks are 'Please stay' and 'distant lover' which follow the similiar theme of begging for a lover to return. It is of course a lovers album probably first and foremost as all the tracks have a sensual theme or mood about them but I also think its just a chilled mellow album that you can listen to when you want to relax.I would recommend this album to all fans of marvin as it is an amazing album sung by an amazing and legendary talent.

I just can't believe that I am the first person to write a review on what is one of the classic soul albums of the last century!!! This album is a masterpiece of sexy smouldoring soul. If you haven't got it in your collection don't hesitate as you will not be dissappointed. Marvin at his very best - worth it for the title track alone, and the whole album is fantastic!!

It's a tricky business opening an album with one of the best songs ever. How can the rest of the album not pale in comparison? Here's Marvin's answer, and while nothing quite matches 'Let's get it on', this would still be a good album even without the title cut. This is Marvin at his smooth sensual best, and his voice was never better - sublime, sexy singing. This album sets down the template for the whole bedroom soul genre - as Marvin says in his sleevenote: "Have your sex, it can be very exciting, if you're lucky. I hope the music I present here makes you lucky."

This is the most sonically seductive, sexy, sensual, sinuous, sumptuously sultry set of songs ever recorded by anyone.
So much praise has been heaped on his previous masterpiece What`s Going On, but to my mind, despite - or because of - the lack of a political statement, this one is even more coherent as an album of songs, which seem to segue seamlessly into each other, which is just great if you`re using the album for, let`s face it, what Mr Gaye meant it to be used for. As another reviewer rightly says, it`s also perfect if you simply want to hear some relaxing soul music. And Marvin had more soul in his little finger than most.
If there`s one word I`d pick to describe his singing on this record it would be `impassioned`. There`s also a gruffness sometimes, which acts as a kind of grainy roughage to balance the liquid smoothness of most of the (often multi-layered) vocals on these immaculate songs.
What`s Going On and Midnight Love are wonderful, essential Gaye albums, but this is the one I`d rush to save from the fire. It`s got everything.
What an incalculable loss it was when the troubled man that was Mr Gaye Snr shot and killed his equally troubled son. Achievements like this, though, are just as incalculable.
Marvin Gaye had a voice like no other. He could be as sensuous as Al Green and as
passionate as fellow Motowner Levi Stubbs, but ultimately he was unique.

Let`s get it on - again!

I made a mistake. My mistake was not buying this album years ago. It's one of the most beautiful, heart wrenching, spine tingling albums I have ever heard in my life and I haven't stopped raving about it since it arrived through my door at the beginning of the week!

Seriously, if you love RnB and soul music then you simply have to buy this album.

I cannot recommend it highly enough. Buy it and tell everyone you know to buy it... they'll thank you for it!

Taken as a whole, this is undoubtedly the greatest 'love' album of all time. It's not very long, but every tune's a winner and the whole fits together perfectly (the title track, "If I Should Die Tonight" and "Just To Keep You Satisfied" are the standouts). *Warning: If you intend listening to this album with a partner of the opposite sex and you aren't planning to start a family right away, it would be sensible to bring some contraception!

The magnificance of this album is almost indescribable. Being 21 years old, I was born slightly after Marvin had died, but nonetheless I am a huge fan of his music. Most people will have heard 'let's get it on' and even if that was the only good song on the album it would be worth buying. however, the other songs are all at least as good or even better than the title track, particularly 'Just to Keep you Satisfied' and 'Distant Lover'. A refreshing change from the albums of nowadays which usually consist of 2 or 3 good singles and fillers.

My favourite Marvin Gaye album, 'If I should die tonight' being one of my alltime favourite songs. I think 'Whats goin on is madly overrated on the vocal side of things, the message and rasing awareness is what I believe led to it's primary success. Not too keen on it myself, this lp however suits me just fine, Marvin really pulls it off :)
