I've used my Dutch Oven once so far and was greatly impressed at a hearty "Cowboy Stew" made from tinned spuds, beans and veg soup quickly thrown together as a first experiment and taking about 20 mins to cook over a very small fire made from a few sticks and pieces of wood. Tasted good and was as hot as nuclear fusion. But surely, I thought, there is more to the Dutch Oven than "Cowboy Stew"? Presumably the word 'Oven' has some meaning to the entire apparatus?
This book was great for the complete novice by describing many recipes in finite detail, but useful detail nonetheless, and covering all those simple things you need to know, such as the way you modulate the heat during cooking on an open fire, how to use the oven as an oven and how to calculate the quantities needed to cater for lots of would-be wild frontiersmen. Being from USA the book does mention products not available in Blighty, but with some thought it's possible to come up with alternatives. The book is a down to earth first step by step guide and gives you confidence to have a go at making the recipes, and once you're used to using the oven you'll feel able to do your own thing.

The start of a love affair: this book, dutch ovens and me

15 years ago I came across this book. Since then I and my family have enjoyed dozens of meals cooked in dutch ovens, both while camping and at home. All of my dutch oven cooking was not from this book, but this book taught me how. I was a complete novice. I didn't even know what a dutch oven was. Now I'm called on for every local block party in Mount Prospect, Illinois to cook my famouns secret cobbler recipies. Well they are all from this book. Great for beginners!

A very good Dutch oven cook book with about 50 recipes

A good inrtoduction on preparing and cooking with a Dutch oven on charcoal. There is a section on Dutch oven tools that has good ideas but leaves out a charcoal starter which I use all the time. The book also includes a lot of recipes and good ideas.

I was a bit disappointed by this book. There wasn't a great variety of recipes and most were geared to outdoor cooking. I'll be looking for another cookbook.
