Incredible full length debut from the Wolverhampton duo. A very eclectic mix of electronica that really shows off just how talented and flexible these guys are as producers. From start to finish this album is something pretty special, mixing elements of downtempo, hip-hop, house, ambient and dance - really not a bad track on it! Sounds like a mix of Bonobo, old Daft Punk and Machinedrum. Their sampling is top notch! Check these guys out.

"Letherette" is a very accomplished, very polished debut album for sure. There are some very deft production touches in there, and it manages to blend a whole heap of contemporary influences into its melting pot. At times there are hints of Delphic, sometimes Burial, a dash of Midnight Juggernauts, plenty of downtempo electro and so on. And yes, I'm aware that each of those comparisons is a couple of years old now...

The slight problem with the end result, though, is that it doesn't end up being enough of anything, as an album. The lack of enough vocals or hooks means it ends up being a background album, instead of grabbing your attention, and by the end it begins to feel just a little bit derivative.

That said, some of the individual tracks are lovely. "The One" is fantastic to drive to, and "Cold Clam" is up to the standards of Burial, which is a big compliment. Overall the emphasis is more on chill than rock, so after a slightly more aggressive start, the latter two-thirds of the album is a slightly more coherent, slightly more laidback work.

So it's an album that's very good in parts, but overall, just a tiny bit too derivative and forgettable.

HASH(0x97224054) out of 5 stars A fine full length debut 27 May 2015

A fine full length debut, Letherette is a mostly down-beat collection of electronica which is strong on atmosphere and soundscapes but with definite pop melodies that tend to linger in one's subconscious. Granted, the duo and their music was born in a club, and tracks like "Warstones" and "The One" attest to this. But even when the tempo is up and the party on, the overall atmosphere is very "chill" and this is a great album to unwind to. The entrancing ambiance and textures of "Cold Clam", "Gas Stations and Restaraunts" and even the more upbeat "Restless" will tend to engulf the listener in a spell that is not at all easy to shake, and there is a sense of nostalgia that is hard to identify as if you know the feelings and sounds from somewhere but just can't pin it down. It's this sense of mystery and enthrallment that makes this album an unforgettable experience one will wish to revisit many times and which overcomes it's minor flaws, such as the at-times silly overuse of sampled vocals that are rarely allowed to complete themselves and which are pointless to attempt to understand or decipher. These same samplings are often played at higher speed to a perhaps unintentionally humorous effect which can get a mite cloying, but the fine quality of the album as a whole truly makes this easy to overlook and the work is an absolutely essential work for any enthusiast of IDM, ambient or chill music.

Letherette blends electronic musical styles into their album with great success. From very uplifting beats to some chill, more downtempo rythms this duo is definitely worth listening to multiple times
