Another Naxos wonder 2 Dec 2002
By R. Rockwell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am new to the glory of Early Music and have found that critically acclaimed Early Music collections of Naxos are a great place to start. I have over 15 and have not been disapponted once. Naxos allows me to experiment without too much financial risk.
I did not know what to expect from the Piae Cantiones because I has never even heard of this collection of sacred songs that wascompiled and edited at a school in Finland. As usual the program notes from Naxos completely filled me in and explained that childen would have sung these songs--thus the Oxford Camerata includes only women's voices on this CD.
Many of the melodies will be familiar to anyone who has knowledge of traditional Christmas carols. Many of these songs brought me tears with their beauty, especially "today let the voices of children resound". As one with no musical training I am not qualified to judges the particulars of the performance. All I feel qualified to say is that these songs moved me. It has become one of my favorite Naxos Early Music CDs

Piae Cantiones 12 Jun 2006
By dame ethel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is a selection of songs from Piae Cantiones (a book of songs from a school in Finland, compiled in the 1500s).

Other than voices (all women), this disc is completely without instruments, and many of the songs are in unison. Other recordings of Piae Cantiones I have listened to have included fairly complex instrumental parts. This one is my favourite because of its simplicity. It is very beautiful and calming to listen to. (It has a kind of Gregorian-chant aura to it.) Even though not all selections are Christmas songs as such, I find it makes for perfect meditative Advent-listening. Some of the harmonising voices are quite unusual - one of the songs (I have momentarily forgotten its name) includes parallel major seconds, minor seconds in unusual places, and other modern-ish harmonies.

Most of the songs are in Latin and one or two have sections in Swedish.

The booklet that comes with the CD is very good and includes translations of all the selections.
