Product Description

May 1991 in the seaside town of Castlerock in Northern Ireland and the bodies of two people - police officer Trevor Buchanan and nurse Lesley Howell - are found in a car filled with carbon monoxide. Their spouses were having an affair and apparently the pair are so distraught they have taken their own lives.

Their adulterous spouses - Sunday school teacher Hazel Buchanan and dentist Colin Howell - had met in the local Baptist Church. Following the apparent double-suicide, they continued their affair secretly for some time but both later remarried.

A series of disasters in Howell's life - the death of his eldest son, substantial losses in an investment scam, and the revelation that he had been sexually assaulting sedated female patients - led to him declaring that he was a fraud, a godless man and telling the elders of his church that he and Hazel Stewart had conspired together to murder their spouses nearly two decades earlier. That confession led to two of the most sensational murder trials ever seen in the United Kingdom, Howell's conviction for murder in December 2010 and Stewart's in March 2011, despite her protestations of innocence.

Distinguished journalist Deric Henderson has been all over this story since it broke. Now, for Let This Be Our Secret , he has carried out extensive interviews with close relatives, friends and associates of Colin and Lesley Howell and Trevor Buchanan and Hazel Stewart. He has examined the 1991 police investigation that failed to detect a crime. And he has also explored how the affair embarrassed and then scandalised the Baptist Church. In Let This Be Our Secret Henderson has produced the definitive account of one of the most extraordinary murder cases to hit these islands for decades.

I bought this out of casual interest and also because it was cheap,I read about the case at the time in the local press, however on reading this excellent account of the facts I now realise what was missing from the papers at the time_namely some decent journalism. The book goes into all aspects of the case in detail without any hint of sensationalism and with consideration for the many victims.Given that the pair committed what was on the surface not one but two "perfect" undetected murders that were mistaken as a suicide pact it's chilling to read how they would never have been caught without the spontaneous confession of one.Best piece of work I've read in a long time, surely deserving of an award?

I found this book to be interesting from start to finish, the true story of the murders and cover up were so bizarre it was like fiction, but of course wasn't.
Well written book and for anyone interested in true crime is a must read.

Good factual read 12 Nov 2011

A well written book which kept me reading _ finished it in just two days and me not a reader wow. Enjoyed the way the book flowed and kept you interested. The author seemed to present a unbiased theme trying to mainain the facts or so It appears. Only victims remain a sad indictment of at times distorted human nature, with its deadly desires. As a commited Christian myself am glad than Gods grace is available to me and by it I can move forward each day.
Sad to say only victims remain in this senario. No different from Dave and Bathsheba your sins will one day find you out.
A great book though!
