Biography

*** THE THRASH METAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR! ***

"Exhibit B: The Human Condition". It's really, really sick. It's really different from the last one and it's really different from the two before. But it's 100 percent EXODUS. Out of the last three, this one is faster, but it's also a little more melodic, and it's also a little bit more old school. Some of Rob's vocal patterns are just so old school; it's… Read more in Amazon's Exodus Store

I'm really not sure what to make of this latest release from Exodus. After a huge hiatus for over a decade and the respawning of what I believe to be some of the best thrash ever produced 'Shovel Head' and 'Atrocity Exhibition' this all seems a bit lazy, and a bit of a step backwards.

Maybe it's just a stop gap to the next studio release, but that could be done quicker if they didn't spend time covering their own 80s thrash classics. Don't get me wrong the music on offer is first class, but exodus have shown the new generation that they are more brutal and powerful than they ever were. Rob Dukes vocals certainly fits the new stuff much better than the bonded by blood Bailoff days.

Another point to make is that all of the tracks on let there be blood (except the last track) are all on 'Another lesson in violence' and benefit more from the raw energy of a live performance than they do the studio. I'm not really that bothered that these songs are remastered and redone because to me the fun of the album is in the speed and energy produced in that particular era. Exodus have moved on and so has their sound and style into something more brutal and extreme. Exodus have shown they really don't need to be an Exodus tribute band coz they're better than they ever were in the 80s.

This cd is great for newbies discovering Exodus for the first time and people who will buy anything by the legends themselves, but there really isn't anything new here, especially for an old-schooler like myself.
Another lesson violence should be visited first before picking this one up.

Hopefully Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit B - shall soon be on its way.

Just in case you're not aware, this CD is a "remake" of the Exodus debut LP, Bonded by Blood. It features the current Exodus line up responsible for the last few Exodus records including singer Rob Dukes. I bought Bonded By Blood when it was released, and I thought it was amazing alongside the other thrash classics. However, I don't believe it stood the test of time, particularly Paul Bailoff's vocals. Exodus went on to make some great CD's with Steve Souza and it's great to see them back over the last few years. I know Paul has gone and we wont criticise the dead, but Rob Dukes is superb, the production is 100% better and the band have over 20 years experience. This CD works on all fronts - If you loved Bonded by Blood and you want to hear it given a breath of life, or if your a fan off the new stuff that just wants to hear another great CD, then Let There be Blood is for you.

What is the point???? 17 Oct 2011
Format:Audio CD
I have listened to the remakes of some of the originals on YouTube out of sheer curiosity and quite frankly i ask the question

"'What is the point???" . . .

I have been a fan of this legendary band since 1985 when i first purchased Bonded By Blood on vinyl and went on to see them several times live including their legendary Hammy Odeon debut with Venom. I even met Gary Holt in Carnaby Street in 1987 and shook his hand!. The original record is killer as their live performances suggested and Paul Baloff delivered these songs so well while he was in the band, so why have they tried to fix what ain't broke???? There was nothing wrong with the original recording, in fact just today i went out for a ride with BBB on my Nano and it sounded amazing, if just short of the vinyl.

Here we have a band that's indeed taken a step backwards and tried to out do some of their earlier work, hoping that modern technology will do the trick, but it hasn't. The songs sound rushed and lack any of the original passion evident on BBB. Sure Baloff wasn't the best singer around but he had a unique voice that really characterized these songs making them somewhat immortal. Piranha is the worst offender where by speeding up they have bodged the entire song and Rob Dukes in my opinion is their weakest link. The man just butchers the song and doesn't capture that original spark that only Baloff could, being the author of it.

Other offenders are A Lesson In Violence which had a fast but slick delivery on BBB here sounds again rushed and bodged as they try to speed it up. It doesn't have the character and intent of its original and just blurs by in a forgettable racket. Even the production is too Pro Tools centred giving it a really clinical almost computerized production that just butchers the original feel of the record. Once again Dukes fails to capture the nuances of Baloff's vocals and just screams his way through the songs in that honey monster style of his so typical of most metal today. This is also typical of the title track Bonded By Blood where Dukes again struggles to capture the passion and irresistible crunch of the song and just buries it with more growling and non singing.

Exodus really had an opportunity to get a proper singer in but just chose to ape all the others with another non singer that doesn't do any justice to this classic album. Sure his efforts with the last three albums work but not here! What was planned as a tribute ends up being an insult to the memory of Paul Baloff. I'm sorry i can't be more positive but Exodus are a legendary act that have written the best thrash metal tunes in history as their track record shows and Let There Be Blood is a regrettable blight on their legacy. So then it begs the question - Bonded By Blood or Let There Be Blood?. Bonded By Blood every time!

Epic fail.
