Biography

“The foundation begins with soul,” explains 20-year-old singer/songwriter/producer Laura Izibor of her passionate, piano-guided songs. On her forthcoming debut album, Izibor continues the lineage set out by artists like Lauryn Hill and Jill Scott; artists who combine a reverence for the traditions of early R&B with a thoroughly modern sensibility. "Let The Truth Be Told," Laura Izibor's debut album combines soul, pop and jazz to create an album to sit alongside artists such as Leela James, Chrisette Michele and Corinne Bailey Rae. Although Laura has a good, soulful voice she lacks the material to be compared to the likes of Jill Scott and Alicia Keys.

The standout song for me is "Shine," Laura's debut single is an upbeat summery pop soul track, with vocals that occasionally sound like Amy Winehouse mixed with Macy Gray. The second single, "Don't Stay" follows the same sound and shows of her great vocals.

"The Worst Is Over," a stripped back piano led ballad which slowly builds up throughout the song and "Mmm..." the rousing gospel influenced track also stand out from the rest.

Many of the songs blend together and thus it creates a nice background atmosphere but just lacks enough stand out tracks to be worthy of 5 stars.

If you're a fan of Joss Stone or John Legend then this is a sound that will please your ears.

The album starts with a bit of the positive-thinking, uplifting song that was the single 'Shine'. A lovely catchy number that you know will brighten up any monday morning.

'If tonight is my last' is a lovely ballad with a catchy tune.

'What would you do' has definite John Legend influence to it. It is musically very simple but lyrically challenges the power of professed love beautifully.

'Mmmm....' is probably my favourite song on the album. It is a slow but beautiful song, extolling the virtues of her lover, with a gospel-choir backing that give this song an ethereal dimension.

'From my heart to yours' is a lovely, upbeat and catchy tune that is just a real summer song. Again vocally very Legend-esque.

From then on the album seems to slip down a couple of levels. The songs are quite mediocre and start to sound very similar.

'Worst is over' however, is a strong sista-song, encouraging one after a painful break-up. Would not be out of place on a soundtrack to a chic-flick.

Overall, it is worth the money spent, especially if you enjoyed Joss Stone and John Legend. The latter half of the album is a bit of a let-down and sound more and more like John Legend.

Might be better just to download the few songs that are actually decent.

There's no doubt that Laura Izibor has a fine voice and knows how to use it. On this album she seems to explore different music genres..

'Shine' has an upbeat, catchy, poppy chorus which is quite whistleable. For me the appeal was shortlived compared to some of the other tracks.

'Don't Stay' and 'If Tonight Is My Last' I found to be a bit corny and reminded me of girl-band material from the likes of All Saints or The Sugababes. Not my bag.

Then out of the blue come..
'Perfect World', A soulful lament with swelling strings. That's more like it.
'Worst Is Over', where Laura croons to the piano then builds with rising BV harmonies. Nice.

And the superb..
'I don't Want You Back'. -Much more like what I would expect from this fine label; a real classic-sounding soul song. There's an unnecessary nod to the intended vintage in the intro which is presented as if played through a Long Wave wireless radio (good job it's at the beginning and quite subtle).

Other tracks/genres include:
'Yes, I'll Be Your Baby' which sounds like film/TV BGM.
'Mmmm' which sounds like a warm-up at my local Methodist church (Gospel).
'From My Heart To Yours" with 80's soul style samples from The Chi-Lites or similar but with more modern vocals over the top.

A word or two about the production..

If you do relish any of these tracks, your listening pleasure should be enhanced by the mainly excellent production. There's a little Atlantic logo on one corner of the CD cover with the words "High Fidelity" alongside. This does seem reflected in real-world output through a decent system or headphones; justice is done to Laura's fine vocal talents.

I guess that being hailed as one of the "next big things" is a double-edged sword and their have been plenty as we go into 2009. It is a problem for both artists for, although it provides the oxygen of publicity, it increases the pressure and raises expectations. Raised expectations can affect the prospective listener too. We all recognise the pleasure to be found in hearing a previously unheard-of artist only to discover that they are the 'best thing ever'. To be told the very same in advance of listening can make that experience - when it comes - seem slightly underwhelming. This album was starting to run that risk, at least as far as I am concerned, and it is not released until 18 May in the UK and 16 June in the US so that is why some weeks ago I got hold of a US copy of the 12" single 'From My Heart To Yours'.

It went some way towards convincing me that I was not about to be disappointed and now that I have listened to the whole album some times I can say that my optimism is more than vindicated. It is common at points such as this to say that the artist evokes so-and-so to provide a touchstone to readers. In this case I am deliberately not going to do this and for two reasons. This is not the genre of music I predominantly listen to and perhaps more importantly, coming to it without preconceptions, the album just seems to be a complete package rather than a mere collection of radio and download friendly titbits for music magpies.

It starts with the UK lead single 'Shine' and that starts with the following lines...

Waking up one morning you realise
Your life is just one big compromise.

Another aspect of the whole album is that it sounds so natural and mature - in the sense that it never seems to be anything other than itself.
