Product Description

Let The Music Play is the authorised story of The Doobie Brothers from their beginnings as a biker band in California in 1970, through their breakthrough with Listen To The Music in 1972, sustained success and line-up changes in the mid-seventies and their change of musical direction and further success following the arrival of Michael McDonald in 1976. Worn out by non-stop touring and internal disagreements the band broke up after a farewell concert in 1982. There were sporadic reunions in the eighties before the band reformed permanently in the early nineties and have continued touring and recording ever since. This new film features contributions from all the surviving key band members, their manager Bruce Cohn and long term producer Ted Templeman to tell the full story of the band s highs and lows through four decades of musical evolution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doobie Story Minute By Minute (148 minutes) 15 Nov 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
What a great surprise this is, instead of the usual boring interviews the original band members Tom Johnston & Pat Simmons look back on the early years, the height of their success mid 70s, Tom Johston's illness and his replacement Michael McDonald who was responsible for their change in direction. Unlike many music videos the band paint an evocative, funny and intersting picture of their history through the good and bad times. It's also good to see Jeff Skunk Baxter, Ted Templeman & Tiran Porter in the film, Skunk is a brilliant guitarist who left Steely Dan to join the Doobies as Fagen & Co wouldn't tour. After over 2 hours you can see the highs and the lows through to their current line up. This film serves to highlight a band that never really got the kudos they deserved - Captain & Me, Stampede and Vices are timeless records.

9 bonus live songs are also included (from the early 70s to now).

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story of a great band 29 Oct 2013

I'm a big fan of the band's 3 albums 1973-5 and never much liked the post-1975 Michael McDonald stuff (although he was great later as a solo artist), but I did enjoy the whole story here. Definitely a worthwhile buy if you're a fan or generally enjoy rockumentaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Doobie Biography 10 April 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
If you've ever wanted to know more about the Doobie Brothers then this is for you. How they formed, broke up and reformed; how they changed music styles and still managed to stay top of the pile - it's all there with some great clips and finishes with some live takes. If you're a Doobie fan then this is a must.
