Product Description

Acclaimed american blues rock and boogie-woogie pianist, Gene Taylor, began, around the age of 16, working with some of the big names in the West Coast blues scene including Big Joe Turner and T-Bone Walker. In the mid-seventies he joined the James Harman Band and then Canned Heat and in 1981 The Blasters recording four critically-acclaimed albums for Warner Brothers and appearing on every important music television show of the period. From 1993 to 2007 Taylor played with The Fabulous Thunderbirds amongst various other projects. During the years Gene's piano playing has been required by Dwight Yoakam, Kim Wilson, Charlie Musselwhite, Amos Garrett, Doug Sahm, Kid Ramos, Junior Watson, Carlos Guitarlos and many more... Let Me Ride In Your Automobile is Gene Taylor's 4th solo album and it's the rockinest one, just like a cocktail of his work with The Blasters during their 1980's Los Angeles heyday and from his later years with The Fabulous Thunderbirds down in Austin, Texas.

Gene Taylor is a fabulous blues and boogie pianist who got his start working with the cream of the West Coast's blues stars, including Big Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, Lowell Fulson and Pee-Wee Crayton. He later went on to work with Canned Heat, the Blasters, James Harman, the Red Devils and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. This solo album is a real international offering, with American Gene being backed by the Dutch band CC Jerome's Jet Setters and being issued on the Spanish label El Toro. Having said that it sounds totally authentic, with Gene and the band working similar territory to Britain's Mike Sanchez - rock and roll, boogie and rocking blues. The band - CC Jerome on guitar, bassist Deon Buck and drummer Coen Molenschot - back up Mr. Taylor really well throughout and are joined on a couple of tracks by Martin "Tinez" Van Toor on tenor sax and US visitor Nick Curran on guitar.

There is a good variety of material here, with Gene and the band totally at home with both old rockers like Johnny 'Guitar' Watson's "Motorhead Baby" and Lowell Fulson's arrangement of "Let Me Ride In Your Automobile" and also tracks written especially for this record. These include both the rocking instrumentals "Evangeline Stomp" and "Flying With Whitey" (with their battling saxes and piano) and the subtler songs like "Just A Midnight Girl" (with its nice harmonica solo from Jeffrey Thielens) and "The Blues To Me", probably my favourite track. This is a really good album, congratulations to all those involved.

to throw a great party is a couple of friends, some beer & Gene Taylor with CC Jerome's Jet Setters - this CD rocks!
I turned up the volume on the ol' HiFi & felt as if I was in a crowded pub instantly.
Songwise there's a good mix of tempos & styles - there are no fillers on this one.
Mixwise it sounds modern & old style at the same time - think loud, dynamic & sometimes rough in a good way.
I can imagine this music going down well among the dance-crowds as well as fans of Thunderbirds & Blasters during their rockiest moments.
Details have already been covered in G.E. Harrison's review.

Advice : buy this CD, some beer & throw a party, unless you can get Gene & Co to come over, this is as good as it gets!

Another Favorite 3 Jun. 2011

Gene Taylor played Piano with The Blasters. And has been a side man in the background of a lot of music (check his discrography).

Latley he stays in Europe, plays constantly and does not record much. But every thing he does do is Gold. I really like the style of his piano playing and the choice of music.

Boogie Woogie, Blues, Rock & Roll, Roots.

OH, and I play along with this CD. I play upright bass. This is recorded on pitch. All tracks.
