Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

With his interminable search for the right vintage guitar, the exact valve amp, it's tempting to see Lenny Kravitz--for all his much-vaunted cool--as something of a trainspotter: pastiche-rock's closet nerd. In fact, the least that can be said of him is that he's consistent in his obsessions. As single-minded (he plays virtually every instrument here) as he is deliberately anachronistic, Kravitz sincerely believes that rock peaked, as an artistic force, in the late 1960s, and has consequently devoted his entire career to recreating that particular period and sensibility. As ever, his sources are impeccable: from Sly & The Family Stone ("Freedom Train"), to the Beatles-esque string arrangement that propels "I Build This Garden For Us"; even his drumming recalls Ringo Starr--just as his vocals bring to mind the raw, emotionally ravaged McCartney of "Oh Darling". Still, he's redeemed--at least in part--by the surprising appeal of his own compositions: derivative they may be, but they're also decent rock and roll songs, albeit in a very classic vein. --Andrew McGuire

5.0 out of 5 stars This is REAL Lenny Kravitz..... 21 Mar 2006
By LisaR
Format:Audio CD
Having been a huge fan of Lenny Kravitz for years and years, I can safely say I will never get bored of this album. The mood it evokes still never fails to take me to another place and another time - providing an aura never quite matched in later albums (even if many of them are technically better). The title track has become an anthem in itself, never fails to seal the ambience at any of his gigs and is certainly one of his very best tracks ever. "Be" just excellent and is SO Lenny - his individuality really shines out here, as it does in the funky "Cab Driver" and "Flower Child". Hurrah for feather boas and silver flares.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Classic! 13 April 2003
By mark
Format:Audio CD
this album is by far the finest work that lenny has ever produced. like with all his other recordings he plays nearly every instrument on every track. from the genius of Let Love Rule (love the sax solo) to the controversial Does Anybody Out There Even Care, he breaks all musical boundaries in his effort to express himself. No genre is left out of this masterpiece. Unfortunately Lenny has not been able to match the brilliance he has shown on this album, with any of his later efforts. All of which seem to fall short of the high standard he set himself with this recording.
This album is an absolute must for any ardent Kravitz fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars The First Cut Is The Deepest 26 Mar 2009
Format:Audio CD
How to review this masterpiece?
Simply Lenny at his best, before commerce got more into his art.
Natural, emotional, analog, humane, touching - in other word: brilliant.
