Book Description

29 Aug 2013

Half a lifetime ago, Alex McKnight was a young cop in Detroit. Now he's an occasional private eye up in Paradise, Michigan, and trying hard to put the past behind him. Then he gets the call that every cop dreads: a killer he helped put behind bars is getting released, and he might just have payback on his mind.

Suddenly the years fall away, and in his mind Alex is back in that hot summer in Detroit, hunting the brutal murderer of a young woman. The problem is, something about the case no longer makes sense, and Alex feels compelled to retrace the steps that led to the arrest and conviction of Darryl King. But it's not just the case that looks different: returning to Detroit, Alex finds a city that is almost unrecognizeable from the one he left, a city that is quite literally dying on its feet, where crime and decay hold sway, and law and order are in retreat.

And as Alex searches for the truth among the shadows of the past, he discovers a story more shocking than the one he thought he knew and a danger more threatening than an ex-con looking for revenge.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good addition to the series 19 Sep 2013

Steve Hamilton is a great author. I have read all his books and would instantly buy any new one he releases. "Let it Burn" is the new one about the former police officer Alex McKnight.

This time most of the story takes place in Detroit instead of the usual places around Paradise where McNight lives. It is one of these books were every second chapter takes place some years ago and the other now. It is a working way of writing but it takes some time to get to the point. The Whole story initially develops a little slower than usual.

But after getting everything in place, the story moves on and the ending is really worth all the reading.

I have to give Hamilton a special award for making Alex McNight one of these heroes that uses his brain instead of just keeping everything to himself. He does the right thing almost every time, like telling the police and the FBI, and yet ends up being the one solving the problem.

Even if this one initially was a little slower than usual it was a great read and I will buy his next book as soon as it gets out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let It Burn 16 Dec 2013
Alex McKnight never expected to return to Detroit. His career as a cop there had come to an abrupt end after eight years when he was placed on disability after being shot three times, only two of the bullets able to be removed, the third remaining half a centimeter from his heart. And his partner had never survived the bullets that hit him. Those events obliterated his entire life as he knew it. But when an old colleague tells him that Darryl King, the man he helped put away just days before that final case, is about to be let out of jail after finishing out his sentence, he feels impelled to go back there. King was just a teenaged boy when the vicious murder to which he confessed occurred. That confession left no doubt of his guilt. Unexpectedly, however, there is a nagging thought buzzing around in McKnight's head, a suspicion that he had missed something vital in the investigation. He enlists the aid of Leon Prudell, with whom he had briefly worked as a private investigator in the past, who McKnight calls "the smartest man in town, and as loyal a friend as you could ever have."

This is a police procedural of the highest order. The chapters in the first half of the book alternate between the present and the events which took place all those years ago at a pivotal, life-changing time for McKnight. The second half of the book follows him trying to go back over everything in the initial investigation to find out what he missed. Ultimately this already fast-paced tale takes a totally unexpected twist. And from that point on, I couldn't put the book down.

As with all Mr. Hamilton's books, the author evokes a very real sense of the places, and the people, about which and about whom he writes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent although a touch too slow..... 17 Oct 2013
I think Steve Hamilton is an excellent writer and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a crime novel without the 'crash, bang' you get in many others of its type; very much a readers book. On one hand that is the strength of the story but when I had had finished it I felt the pace could have been picked up a little, a strange thing to say when I did enjoy the story but other reviewers may well understand my comment. He is a very good writer and I will be browsing for the books I have yet to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow start definitely worth reading. 9 Oct 2013

I enjoyed this book immensely and have no hesitation in recommending it. It's worth setting aside some time to read the first few chapters together to really get into the story and get to know Alex, the main character. His is a journey into the past that changes the way he sees the people he worked with and the city he lived in.

Brilliantly described Detroit stands as a city in decay and becomes a character in the story as much as any other. The mood is carefully crafted and provided me with a real emotional context for the story.

This is a slightly unusual take on a crime story and the twists and shocks are artfully woven through the novel.

My other half is now devouring it and taking the book everywhere he goes.
