The Best, 5 Jun 1999

This review is from: Let the Crazy Child Write!: Finding Your Creative Writing Voice (Paperback)
I write every day, and I've read all the books about writing-- Lamont, Glen Frey, Syd Feild, Linda Seger, John Gardner, etc.-- and this book is by far the best. In fact, if you get this book, you don't need any other, because this one says what all the other say, and better, and then says a lot more. It's changed the way I write, it's made me comfortable with my creativity, and there's so much wisdom and humor it makes learning fun. I keep it by my computer as I write and reference it daily. If the muse isn't speaking, I read a page of Clive Matson's book and get an idea. Guaranteed to incinerate your writer's block.

A tremendous tool for anyone looking to free their trapped spirit, to explore the unexplored areas of their own creativity, or merely to develop additional skills in writing and communication, this book will enhance your perspectives and your creativity. Using the basic strategies of discussion, exercise, workshop and practice, Matson takes the reader/writer through twelve chapters--each with a particular focus as relates to the creative writing process. Examples, explanations and encouragement are found throughout. A welcome addition to the literature of creative writing, the work is accessible by a variety of age groups.

A Vibrant, Wise and Sympathetic Guide for the New Century, 21 Jan 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Let the Crazy Child Write!: Finding Your Creative Writing Voice (Paperback)
Matson strikes a savvy balance in this well organized writing guidebook. He honors the source of creativity and the adventure that the writer's journey into mind and heart truly is at its best. He blends this with the practical essentials such as voice, story, image and of course revision to make a writing guide for the whole person. Teachers will find new ideas and new approaches, and writers of all types and stripes will find encouragement, permission, and inspiration in these pages. Matson's method seems instinctively correct from his "rules for workshop" to his sense of fun, to his fresh view of issues such as cliches and nitpicking. It is a method that has the stamp of a caring, experienced, and committed master teacher. Any reader should be moved to pick up the pen or keyboard and begin to explore the wealth of the "crazy child" within--without fear and without anxiety. As the author states, "all you need is the urge." (And this book at your side, I'd add!)
