4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive solo outing 24 Nov 2000
Format:Audio CD
Shawn Smith is a man of many musical talents, as this album shows. For fans of any of his other bands, this album is a must. Highlights of this album include 'Land Of Gold', which is reminiscent of Brads second album Interiors, 'Let It All Begin', the title track, a mellow affair, with great piano based rhythm, 'The Train Is Coming', excellent up beat moment of the album, great to sing along to, and 'Our Songs', another mellow song, very touching. All of the songs on this album are great, the first song reminded me a lot of pigeonhed. I felt that the album was let down by the first two tracks having a synthetic feel with obvious computer MIDI drum tracks, apart form that, this is a great album, with great songs. Shawn Smith is indeed a very classy musician, with a very different voice. Buy it now, and share these moments of beauty.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great album, moves on from satchel 9 May 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
having seen Shawn Smith in concert twice in concert with one of his better known bands, Brad this album presents this man's many talents whether it be as a singer, songwriter or musician. Indeed Shawn plays all the instruments on over half of the album. If you like Brad, Satchel or Pigeonhed then you should add this cd to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nick Drake of our time... 20 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is Shawn Smith (lead singer of Brad and Satchel) at his most lyrical and smooth. Actually, I think Shawn Smith solo is better than his groups, and this is his best record I.M.H.O. (though his last one, The Diamond Hand, is also excelent and comes close in second).

From the very begining you'll know there's not much "hard rocks" in this one, most songs are piano driven ones, but not in a boring way. My Very Best is a wonderful start, Land of Gold is the closest here to a hit, Let it all Begin has the most beautiful piano chords, Pearl has a great guitar solo, to remind you a bit that Shawn was part of the Grunge Generation, and On the Banks is another hit. All other songs are great too (ok, the bonus tracks are not that great).

Well, this record reminds me of Nick Drake, I don't know why. Anyway, buy it, listen to it, you won't regret.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shawn Smith music is NOT hard to find 11 May 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Shawn Smith is an amazing, AMAZING musician that I highly reccomend, but his music is not hard to find and there is no reason to pay $99 for one of his CDs. Simply go to establishmentstore.com and you can pick up Let it All begin and his new CD for the cost of a normal CD.
$99 bucks - that just trying to rip people off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shawn Smith; the most under rated musician of the 90's 13 Nov 1999
By Leith Anderson (esq.) (leithanderson@hotmail.com) - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Shawn Smith is one of the most under rated musicians of the latter part of the 90's. His work with Satchel, Brad, and Pigeonhed all share the common threads of experiencing the best aspects and emotions of life: love, anger, bitterness, desolation, hope... With the release of a solo album he was able to embody everything he wanted to say to the world. His piano soothes, his voice has a characteristic warmth, and his lyrics put Bob Dylan to shame. Buy it. Love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars No more ailias' on this job! 2 Mar 2000
By Peter Fox - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Once again Shawn Smith has come up with an album to put any leading artist to shame! Pure, simplistic and some of the most heartfelt lyrics to come from an amazingly prolific man. The influence by Prince is not as prominate as 'EDC' or 'Pigeonhed' but still it has the rawness of something strong thats just about to happen. If this is his 'debut', I can't wait to hear his 'Sign 'O' the times'.

5.0 out of 5 stars genius 1 Oct 2000
By kath - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
With six albums under his belt with Brad, Satchel and Pigeonhed and collaborations with the Afghan Whigs, Shawn Smith has finally found the courage to release an album that is completely his own. And it's beautiful. From the simplistic piano/vocal "Our Songs" (reminiscent of the truly amazing Shame) to enveloping electronic Pigeonhed-esque sound of "Someday", Smith draws together the styles of his previous work into what is his own unique sound. With the wonderfully uplifting lyrics, this album is guaranteed to make you feel warm and happy on even the dullest of days... and if you thought this was good you have to get a copy of his live album!!
