Product Description

Product Description

A detailed and unique training resource, Lessons with the Master is a meticulous account of the teaching methods and lesson strategies of world-famous karate master Hirokazu Kanazawa, chief instructor and president of the Shotokan Karate International Federation of Japan.

Author and karate instructor Paul Walker spent three years studying karate under the direct guidance of Master Kanazawa and his expert instructors and has now compiled his diary entries of those years into this easy-to-understand reference for all students and instructors of Shotokan karate. Lessons with the Master offers ideas, tips, and guidance on the use of authentic Shotokan karate-do to supplement and improve current training and drill-teaching.

Using the database of lessons, the additional explanations on lesson components, and the many other instructional tips, students and coaches can design an endless number of coherent and effective workouts and incorporate them seamlessly into their regular karate training. Detailed lesson notes, a glossary, and Walker's engaging anecdotes make Lessons with the Master an indispensable resource for all karate practitioners.

What a rip off!

I was so disappointed with this book, I almost cried! Most karate books on the market these days comprise so-called masters showing off a myriad of karate techniques. Those are the WORST kind of karate book, and such books bore me stupid.

Granted, Paul Walker has created something original, but all he has really done is managed to create a marvelous door-stop. While there is some content of interest, who the heck wants to read through the lists of mae geris and choku zukis that Walker performed in Japan. What a total scam! I bought this book thinking it would provide me with insights into someone who had trained with Kancho Kanazawa, one of the living legends of karate. Instead, as a karate sensei with 36 years experience, I felt totally ripped off. Paul Walker, you've written this book hanging onto the coat tails of a true karate expert, and it looks to me that you've done this simply to make a fast buck. Poor show...

The author Paul Walker went to train in Japan with Master Kanazawa at his main Honbu Dojo in Kugahara, Tokyo ,Japan . While he was there he kept an extensive training diary. Virtually every single lesson under a variety of the S.K.I.'s finest instructors who aided and taught on the occassions when Kancho Kanazawa wasnt available to train the students. Most of the book is a list of techniques combinations and katas that they had done on a certain day, which can be tedious to read page after page of, but great if you want ideas to work out a training routine for yourself or a class. After a lot of the lesson lists quite often there are observations about various facets of techniques and performing them, and some of this stuff are the true golden nuggets that are scattered throughout the book. Aside from technical aspects there are personal observations about the masters and the social side of the dojo. Its definitly not a learn Karate book, as such ,you have to know your stuff ,especially as most of the techniques are in Japanese. Its a book to dip into. I got a few good insights into aspects of technique which helped my technique and you cant ask for more than that.

Valuable resource 6 Mar 2008
By Odin Guirado Marcelo - Published on Amazon.com
There are some books which can be informative, and those which are inspirational. This book is all that and more. It's useful. It's probably the best resource for a karate instructor for planing a coherente training schedule, and a teaching strategy.

It's clear, based on sound experience -the author learned with the best of the best, at the SKIF Hombu Dojo- and based on clear concepts.

Truth to be said, I am not a karate instructor. However, I believe that if you plan to become one yourself, this book will certainly help.

I firmly belive this book to be a valuable resource for spreding karate and its benefits -which go beyond self defense- throughout the world.
