Book Description

1 July 2008
Blackmailed into a marriage five years ago, and forced by their overbearing families to consummate that union so it could never be legally questioned, Victoria and Justin Talbot have been more than happy to live apart ever since, although neither one has quite forgotten the one night they shared. But now Victoria has been forced to come to London in the disguise of London's most talented and sought after courtesan. Invading Justin's world, she is on a desperate search to find a missing friend and stay clear of her very angry, suddenly possessive husband. Only this time, one taste is not going to be enough for Justin. He is determined not only to uncover Victoria's secrets, but to claim her, body and soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great stand alone novel! 25 July 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was the first book i've read by Jenna Petersen, but i was so happy i took a chance on it-usually i read the first chapter on the internet before buying a book but with this one i didn't, so i had no idea of what to expect.

Petersen opens the novel with Victoria and Justin's wedding night, which i liked because i personally prefer the characters to marry, then discover their relationship-i think i just like how they have no way out!

Anyway, she opens with the wedding night-which was steamy and memorable for both of them ( and for us readers!) The story then leaps to four years later, Justin back in London, carrying on with his life as he did before he married, until Victoria attends one of the less-than-proper balls and shocks Justin!, claiming she has taken a lover who taught her everything about sex! i loved the sense of female power Petersen gave Victoria when she claimed this, shocking Justin and (quite rightly) reminding him of his beautiful wife!

But Victoria is in London for other reasons than shocking and making Justin jealous, she is there to investigate why her friend has gone missing-posing as a luring, sexually expierenced woman to gain attentions of the possible men who may of harmed her friend.

She just hadn't counted on the sexual tension between her and Justin and the matter that she starts to like him! but all is not smooth as she finds out about the women he slept with in the four years they were seperated, or how Justin finds himself insanely jealous that his wife may have taken a lover (even though she has not).

A great story! i read it when i was on holiday in Devon and had finished it within 4-5 hours of starting it! worth the money!

Def 5 stars and more if i could!

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and exciting Regency romance 13 Sep 2008
By josie82 TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The ton is abuzz with the mystery and beauty of "Ria". The men and consumed with desire for her and the woman are all jealous of her. Each needs to find out all they can about the lady that has been dubbed 'England's greatest courtesan'. All except Justin Talbot, the Earl of Baybury. He knows very well that the mysterious "Ria" is actually his estranged wife.

Three years ago, the day after their wedding, Victoria Talbot was abandoned in the country to live on her own. Now she is in London on a mission to help her friend but if she also manages to drive Justin a little mad with lust and jealousy, then that's all he deserves! Justin is determined to find out her secrets and as the pair spend more time together they realise that the games they are playing with each other might just be leading to something a whole lot more.

I very much enjoyed this well-written and very engaging story. Both Justin and Victoria were intelligent and drawn-out characters that had fabulous chemistry and very real emotions. I loved the pair together even if they both had to, at times, work hard for their happy ending.

As I said, the plot was really engaging and it made you want to keep reading to find out what happened next. There were lots of twists and turns and secrets to be revealed that meant there were no dull moments from beginning to end.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. It was exciting, well-written and reminded me of books by Debra Mullins or Sabrina Jeffries. If you're looking for a book to escape with then you should definitely give this one a try. 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars A mystery and a masquerade 28 April 2009
By Helen Hancox TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I read this book just a few days after 'The Club' by Sharon Page and found a surprising number of similar plot events in the two books. Both involve the heroine trying to find the whereabouts of a friend and, in order to do this, becoming involved in a masquerade which involves her behaving in ways not expected for someone like her. In 'Lessons from a Courtesan', as might be deduced, our heroine Victoria has arrived in London pretending to be the courtesan 'Ria'. Unfortunately for Victoria, her husband - a man whom she spent just one night with before he left her and went abroad - has returned and has singled out Ria. She's surprised to find that the Earl of Baybary is willing to help her in her hunt for her friend, but can she spend all this time with him and not pine for a future it seems they will never have.

There was much to like about this book, although it wasn't particularly original in execution. I liked both Victoria and Justin and found their relationship reasonably convincing. I was less sure about the history that brought them together, finding it not entirely convincing or believable. Historical accuracy was less important than plot and characterisation but overall it was a reasonably enjoyable read.
