Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Lesley Garrett, the eponymous album by Britain's most popular soprano was made not as the soundtrack, but as a companion to the artist's 1998 self-titled BBC television series. Recorded with a fine sounding BBC Concert Orchestra, the 20 selections offer a well-rounded portrait of the "Diva of Doncaster", encompassing not just the entire spectrum of opera, but Broadway too. The album ranges from Giordani's fine eighteenth-century love song "Caro Mio Ben" to the beautiful aria "Ombra mai fu" from Handel's opera Xerxes. Moving to the nineteenth century, Garrett offers the delicate "Seguedille" from Bizet's Carmen, while the opening and closing selections come from the passionate world of Verdi, the finale "Brindisi" featuring the tenor John Hudson and the chorus London Voices. Again with John Hudson, comes the rapturous ballad "Tonight" from West Side Story, before Garret is supported by a full company on "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" from My Fair Lady, and, solo once more, gives a luxurious reading of Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me". In full and expressive voice through-out, Lesley Garrett's many admirers will have no hesitation in adding this lavish album to their collections. --Gary S. Dalkin

This is the finest of all the albums that I have heard by Lesley Garrett. Recorded in 1998 it catches her in her prime, mature enough for real experience and skill to be evident in the performances but still young enough for her voice to be at its absolute peak, demonstrating the purity and beauty of tone for which she is well known. This is not some hyped up so-called opera singer. Lesley is the real thing. She has many years of experience performing live in fully staged complete operas and this really shows here. Her quality in the Handel arias obviously draws on her many performances in the excellent productions of Handel operas at the English National Opera. This true operatic pedigree shines through the wide variety of opera arias which make up just under half of this collection.

The fun Lesley is here too, represented by several songs from light opera, operetta and musicals. This is, of course, another area in which she is a truly excellent performer and where her real Northern charm comes to the fore.

The other reason that this is, I think, her most successful collection is that it is just Lesley and the excellent BBC Concert Orchestra, without the distraction that so often comes from 'guest' performers on many of her shows and CDs. On this CD the only guest is John Hudson singing the duet 'Tonight' from West Side Story with Lesley. This frankly demonstrates why it is usually better just to have Lesley. He is a perfectly decent tenor but is no match for the sheer beauty and quality of Lesley's voice. London Voices do, however, provide some useful choral support in a few of the numbers.

This is my favourite of all Lesley Garrett's albums. It may be ten years old, originally released in 1998 but, it shows Lesley Garrett at her ultimate best.

I know it sounds a bit of a cliche, but everything about this album is, in my view perfect. The repetoire chosen is well balanced and performed exquistly by Lesley Garrett, from a vocal point of view.

My personal favourites include: Puccini's "Vissi D'Arte; Dvorak's "Songs My Mother Taught Me"; "In Quelle Trine Morbide" (Puccini); and "The Impossible Dream" (From "The Man of La Mancha").

I would heartily, recommend this album to anyone. This is also a good album, for those who are looking for an introduction to Lesley Garrett's work
