Format: Audio CD
This is an excellent disc of baroque solo viol music from Jordi Savall. There are pieces by a variety of composers, many of whom you would expect to find in such a programme, like Marais, Sainte-Colombe and Forqueray, but there are also fine pieces by Schenck, de Machy and d'Hervelois whom I hadn't come across before. It's a lovely, varied programme and a fascinating and beautiful listen throughout.

In his notes Savall stresses that commentators of the time suggested that the viol these pieces should sound close to the human voice. This leads to a freely-phrased and intimate performance which he pulls off superbly. Savall has been one of the world's very finest gamba players for decades now and his superb technique and musicianship shine through this disc. My only small reservation comes in the selected movements from the Bach Cello Suites where it seems to me that the rhythmic freedom means that Bach's essential pulse is a little lost, but it's a tiny niggle and a very personal one which may not bother others at all.

The recorded sound is excellent, beautifully catching Savall's lovely viol tone (and his occasional groaning along with the music) and the presentation and notes are of Alia Vox's usual excellent, lavish standard. I warmly recommend this disc - it's another cracker from Jordi Savall.

Viola da Gamba at its best 14 April 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Jordi Savall is a player of rare sensitivity and virtuosity. This CD of solo works for the viola da gamba is an encylopedia of gamba styles and a treasure chest of baroque compositions. From start to finish this CD is riveting, the beauty of his playing and the compositions is awe inspiring. The recording is excellent and the liner notes are informative. Savall's playing of Maris is heartrending, and his interpretation of movements from the Bach cello suites is revelatory. This CD is a great introduction to the viola da gamba as well as a treasure trove for any gamba fan.

The true "human voice" of the baroque 19 Oct. 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
As always in J.Savall, the reconstruction of the baroque sounds & spirit is perfect. This time the music really succeds in filling the XXI century listener with the tortured spirit of the XVI century. A last recomendation, it is a record to be listened to in the dark.

I've never used this word before. Sublime. 24 Aug. 2007
By Daniel Somerville - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This CD transcends ordinary beauty. I can almost imagine basing a religion around it.

The only thing I can say is that it is what it is supposed to be; a musical instrument played alone, by a master, and sounding for all the world like a human voice, breathing, speaking, crying, searching. Unbelievable until you hear it.
