About the Author

Ronald Searle, CBE, RDI, was born in Cambridge in 1920. He is best known as the creator of St Trinian’s school and the Molesworth series (with Geoffrey Willans). He started drawing at the age of 5 and left school at the age of 15. In 1942 he was captured by the Japanese in Singapore and was sent to the Kwai jungle, to work on the Siam-Burma Death Railway. Liberated in 1945, he returned to England, with over 300 drawings that survived, many of which were published in the moving To the Kwai and Back. He married Kaye Webb, founder of Puffin Books, in 1947. In 1961 he moved to Paris and later married Monica Koenig. Since 1975, they have lived and worked in the mountains of Haute Provence. In 2007 he was decorated with France’s highest award, the Legion d’Honneur and in 2009 he received the German Order of Merit.

This book defines everything that love should be about. In a world where people are becoming seemingly too busy to remember the important things, here we have a man whose heart was sprinkled into every illustration in this beautiful book. At 91 years old, Ronald is unlikely to ever read this article but if any of his family or friends care to, then please, please remember what a magnificent man he is and the love for his Monica is only something I strive to have for my partner. If anything, this book solidifies my belief that love truely exists and it can sometimes just take a cruel end to stop the physical togetherness with somebody. The memories and love remain for eternity. God bless you, Ron, and your dear dear late wife Monica. You are outstanding and your honesty is so admiring. Please buy this book, and please understand it's meaning.

This small book is such a comfort.
You do not have to be ill or recovering from an illness etc to appreciate this book.
It is a joy to read, and although written through the stages of cancer, and the eventual all clear. I think it would appeal to many.
Lovely, can't praise it high enough.

Ronald Searle's final publication shares the drawings he made for his wife when she was gravely ill and undergoing grueling medical treatment, each drawing marking the treatment sessions, to glimpse for them both, a hopeful future. The drawings in Searle's trademark style are both delightful but also moving and his fans will want a copy. But should they know anyone who is struggling with ill health and in need of a dose of optimism, send them this. Never originally intended for publication, Searle and his wife decided to share them, a gift to the rest of us, before they both died last year.
