Product Description

** RELEASED OCTOBER 28TH** A stunning collaboration between internationally-renowned artists Natacha Atlas and Samy Bishai, this album consists of music commissioned for, as well as music provoked by one of contemporary dance's most noted luminaries, French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj. Performed by the esteemed Ballet Preljocaj, the 90 minute piece was inspired by classical literary work, The Thousand and One Nights. Fans will be thrilled that it sees Atlas's long-awaited return to electronics and sound design whilst she continues to draw on the acoustic/classical. But this is only the start. In Les Nuits, Atlas's voice becomes an instrument in its own right, seamlessly weaving itself into the multi-stranded Atlas-Bishai fabric of sound design, electro-acoustic contemporary Western classical music, classical and folkloric Arabic music, film scores, and jazz. In Les Nuits, Atlas and Bishai take us on a musical journey of unprecedented panoramic proportions reminiscent of the Nights itself, guiding us through a dazzling array of narrative soundscapes overflowing with lusty vitality, disquieting menace, ephemeral beauty, and shocking savagery. Clearly, through composing for dance and being imbued by the spirit of the Nights, Atlas and Bishai have opened up a breadth of musical possibilities to find innovative ways of re-telling old tales and to introduce us to unforgettable new ones.

Les Nuits is a treasure trove of middle-eastern-inflected sound-scapes. Atlas and Bishai have achieved something genuinely powerful and unique with this album; compositions full of cinematic scale, mystery, beauty, sly wit , rapture, heartfelt emotion and crafty attention to detail. Les Nuits will reward the open-minded listener, taking him/her on a journey which, like the best music, conjures a multitude of images. It achieves something comparable to Byrne and Eno's 'My Life in the Bush of Ghosts'. Listen to it with an open mind, a free hour or two and a drink or three - and prepare to be enthralled. Loved it. More of the same please!

Natacha's gorgeous voice is reason enough to buy any album. She has never rested on her laurels but has always produced something different. This is music for a ballet and includes some electronica, which has been missing from her recent work, and she reprises "Amulet" and "Man's World", but mainly the music is for a very different dance form from usual.

Natacha Atlas has done it again!! I own everything Natacha has released from the Diaspora to Les Nuits, I own 'em all! This album is freakin' awesome! All the songs are unique in their own way. The album was produced by Natacha & her hubby Samy Bishai. I am glad that this album was released in the U.S as an MP3 download, although nothing beats having the physical copy. I am extremely pleased with my purchase, Natacha truly is a gifted artist and we should be happy that she still makes music and can only hope that she'll continue to blow our ears with her tantalizing voice and music.

"Les Nuits" is a dream. Originating as a score for a ballet, the tone is generally smooth and rich: rhythmic, but lush and unhurried as it unfolds. The vocals and instrumentals complement each other, often in quite experimental excursions - never harsh, but bold nonetheless.

One of the many reasons I am such a fan of Natacha Atlas is her ability to produce an apparently endless stream of luscious explorations into new territory whilst maintaining continuity with her trove of musical stories. She does this partly by reworking earlier tunes, so there are some old favourites here: but they are newly bedecked and enriched - never taking anything away from previous versions, but shining bright in their new settings. Another reason is her generosity and talent for collaboration: this album really is a joint project with Samy Bishai, who has some wonderful instrumental pieces on display in addition to his mastery of arrangements and production. I will be enjoying the fruits of this partnership many times over whilst awaiting the next chapter.

I am a die hard fan and Ms Atlas is alway on the cutting edge the Middle Eastern pop genre. I wish i could put my finger on it - I have a hit and miss even within each selection, if that makes sense.
