...and Les Bronzes, a classic and huge box-office success in its native France that spawned two sequels, is a perfect example. The debut of theatrical comedy troupe Le Splendide that included future fixtures of the French film industry like Thierry Lhermitte, Michel Blanc, Josianne Balasko, Christian Clavier and Gerard Jugnot, it's best described as a French Carry On Abroad that had a real budget that allowed them to go on location instead of shooting the whole thing on the studio backlot. Following the bedhopping staff and holidaymakers at a Club Med-like resort on the Ivory Coast, it's not quite as crude as the US title French Fried Vacation implies - it's generally more underplayed with an emphasis on casual cruelty - but it's also not especially funny for most non-French audiences. Although the translation of the wordplay is partly to blame, it's all rather familiar ground, though it does capture the move from expectation to disappointment to finally getting into it when its suddenly time to go home as it ambles along in its undemanding and unhurried way. Not really deserving of three stars but not weak enough for two, but Amazon have no two-and-a-half stars option, which is where this rightfully sits.
Pathe's UK DVD has a decent subtitled widescreen transfer with a specially shot trailer masquerading as an advert for the club the only extra.
