Product Description

Brazilian Music Awards

WINNER - Best New Artist

CD Description

Sultry, seductive and infused with that inimitable samba swing, the music of Luísa Maita embodies the modern spirit of Brazil. Inspired by the bustling urban life found in her native city of São Paulo, Lero-Lero has a contemporary vibe with influences from alternative pop and chilled out electronic music, but with an acoustic foundation deeply rooted in local samba, bossa nova and MPB. Fans of Bebel Gilberto, Céu and Seu Jorge will find much to love in Luísa Maita’s tropical, forward-looking sound, and her sensual yet soulful voice begs comparisons with everyone from Billie Holiday and Sade to Feist, St. Vincent and Cat Power. Hailing from a country overflowing with musical talent, Luísa Maita rises above the fray as one of the most promising young singers of her generation. Her first album as a solo artist, Lero-Lero, which was co-produced by Paulo Lepetit and Rodrigo Campos, offers songs that encourage her fellow Brazilians to recognize the beauty and deeper meaning of their lives. “Its inspiration comes from the urban life of São Paulo, its ghettos and its people,” notes Luísa, “The lyrics and the aura of the album focus on the peculiarities of Brazilian daily life, culture and human condition.” Tracks: Lero Lero / Alento / Aí Vem Ele / Desencabulada / Fulaninha / Mire E Veja / Maria E Moleque / Anunciou / Um Vento Bom / Alívio / Amor E Paz

Luisa Maita, é muito legal! 27 Jan 2011
By Michael Quick - Published on Amazon.com
Album: Lero Lero

Luísa Maita, a new huge talent and stunning beauty, appears to easily be latest up and coming São Paulo siren showcasing her talents on her debut album "Lero Lero" - which is slang in Brazilian Portuguese for "idle chit chat".

There is a saying in Brazil, that São Paulo is where you make your money and Rio is where you spend it - her roots in S.P. show that this album is all business. Each track offers something new, nothing comes off contrived, as it always feel organic. She masterfully flows her words to construct, if you will, undercurrents of rhythms built right into the lyrics particularly in Alento, a song about the industrious city of Sao Paulo, and Lero-Lero which is a bit more earthy and soulful.

Lero-Lero weaves in a lot of things from many diverse sounds - electronic sounds, to make-out Samba, to Dub Reggae (which is big in Brazil); all flowing together to make a new, fresh, and exciting sound. What other better way to represent this up and coming country? There are also two Remixed Lero-Lero albums that are of worth giving a listen to as well.

I've spent more than 6 years listening exclusively to Brazilian music, and I don't like the negative reviews at all. I find their review(s) particularly anemic because it's really talking about a "dividing line" (if you will) between the more classic sounds and these new artists who are blending in a lot of different things to make exciting new contemporary music. I mean how is Céu marginalized after hearing "Malemolência", a song around a word meaning that certain "thing" that makes someone effortlessly great at something. Or Luisa's piercing and soulful voice in "Lero Lero". How can you not love "Alento" the part staggered and smooth pace of "Alento" ? Luisa is everywhere in Brazil, billboards, jingles, etc. and rightfully so.

Sure, music is subjective, that is my exactly point - I love all of the music that purist reviewers mentioned, they all fit together well because for example Celso Fonseca and say Clara Moreno are throw back Samba singers, you could even say that about some of Bebel Gilberto's work as well. Though, Céu , Luisa Maita, Roberta Sa, Roberta Campos, Seu Jorge, Vanessa Da Mata, Nina Becker, Sonantes, etc. etc. etc. are great in their own right. I think if one widens thier views, they will come to appreciate and love an album that stands out in it's own right. I absolutely agree with all of the buzz around this album, it has so much character, and soul...

Luisa, é demais demais!

Sweet, mellow Brazilian ballads 22 Sep 2010
By DJ Joe Sixpack - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Luisa Maita
"Lero Lero"
(Cumbancha, 2010)
---------------------------------------
A lovely album of dreamy, femme-y vocals from Sao Paulo native Luisa Taubkin Maita (the niece of Brazilian jazz pianist Benjamin Taubkin...) This bossa-esque set invites comparison to other modern, genre-hopping chanteuses such as Bebel Gilberto and CeU, but Maita has less invested in the club-scene electronica that defines their work. This is, at heart, a gentle, stripped down MPB set, reminiscent of Astrud Gilberto's classic early work, with a subtle jazz flavoring... Maita is lulling and sweet on the album's many slow and moderate-tempoed songs, but she also proves herself supple and adept at her phrasing on more uptempo material. If you are looking for something mellow yet substantive, this set of groovy Brazilian ballads may be just the thing for you. Recommended! (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Brazilian Music)
