Book Description

In his youth, Leonardo da Vinci wrote confidently, "I wish to work miracles." By the time of his death in 1519, when he was sixty-seven and famed throughout Europe, it seemed that he had accomplished wonders aplenty as an artist, engineer, inventor, and scientist. Here, from author Jay Williams, is the moving story of the man behind the Renaissance myth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very readable 10 Sept. 2014

I found this book very readable. Unlike other publications which I have tried to read on Leanardo Da Vinci this was not at all hard going and made me feel that I had gained an insight into Leanardo the man and what had driven him. It is not a 'dry' historical document but rather a somewhat more intimate look at his life and times and friends and family. Although a book like this could not be written without some mention of his major achievements such as the Mona Lisa, his sculptures and his inventions, these are not the main focus of the book, more the political circumstances of the time and the social connections that brought about these marvels of the Renaissance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite Interesting 19 Sept. 2014

I was interested to learn more about Leonardo da Vinci though felt I had picked up most of the information in the book over the years. It describes his life and achievements and they are worth being reminded about. A quote towards the end of the book describing how many men and women are born with remarkable talents, states 'But occasionally, in a way that transcends nature, a single person is marvelously endowed by Heaven with beauty, grace and talent in such abundance that he leaves other men far behind.' It is fascinating how one man could have ideas and insights centuries ahead of his own time.

I have always been interested in the facts about Leonardo's life, and this book delivered. It's a well-written, entertaining, illuminating look into one of the most incredible minds and personalities to ever walk the earth. He changed the way we live, and this book will change the way you see him. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars a good introductory book for the Young Adult reader 2 Aug. 2014

a good introductory book for the Young Adult reader, however, for one who is interested in a more indepth description of De
Vinci's art as well as his other accomplishments, it is overly simplistic, and gives a sort of gee-whiz listing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Summary of da Vinci's life 30 Oct. 2014

This was a good summary of the great painter and thinkers life and works. I learned some things about him that I did not know. This did not dwell on the technical aspects of his work but was more of a summary of his life and major accomplishments. If want to know about his life this is a good read.

I'm afraid, while I enjoy reading again, about the life of Da Vinci, the book is written like a text book. Not what I was expecting.

It spelled out the facts well, but not much commentary.
