What a beautiful book.
A treasure trove of Leonardo da Vinci's drawings, paintings and manages to communicate something of his thoughts.
The book is quite large (27 cm x 36 cm) and as a result, most of the drawings are full size
It includes around 200 illustrations, of which 18 are in colour.
This book really does convey something of the uniquely talented Leonardo da Vinci.
He was a man who's talents spread in every direction Drawing, Painting, Engineering, Anatomy, Aerodynamics (before it was invented !) and a man imbued with a humanist perspective on the world. He never stopped looking, and wondering.
This book, though not new, captures Leonardo magnificently, and includes both his letters and other documents, and a portrait of him by Giorgio Vasari, the famous writer on Renaissance artists who was almost a contemporary.
The plates, drawings and portraits are accompanied by explanatory notes, and the whole thing has been put together by perhaps one of the very best Leonardo scholars, Ludwig Goldscheider under the auspices of Phaidon Press (perhaps the best art publisher ?)
The copy that I have is actually from 1945 but is essentially the same as the one featured here.
It is well put together, easy to read, and reference.
A timeless classic.
It really is quite astonishing that one can pick up such riches for the prices shown here.
If you get the chance, go for it, I don't think you will regret it.
