Format:Audio CD
I love this CD! The book (the song words) by Hugh Wheeler are appropriately full of satire, I love Bernstein's score and this edition is just super. A real quality recording. The political background behind Candide is fascinating. I haven't gotten around to reading Voltaire's Classic Candide (Penguin Popular Classics) yet... but I fully intend to rectify this matter soon. It's a great gift for musical and operetta fans.

Just marvellous; that sums up (for me) this witty, funny, sad, wonderfully scored musical treat. Taking Voltaires classic of an innocent abroad and his education by the world into someone sadder but wiser, the whole crew behind this extravaganza have done a fantastic job. From the authors to the conductor, from the lyricists to each of the performers, there is not one bad performance.
I first became acquainted with this work years ago when I heard the final chorale on the radio and wanted to find out more about it and the whole work it came from. "Make our garden grow" still brings tears to my eyes. Every aria (or should that be song?) is spot on; every one a show stopper.
If you like Bernsteins work, or even if you don't, buy this gem; you'll love it!!

"Candide" is the essence of Bernstein. it captures his melodic but 'edgy' style better than anything else he wrote. On this recording, with the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Bernstein is also the conductor so we can be assured that this is the 'definitive version'. Bright, witty, full of life and charachter - Voltaire will be smiling too!

A superb rendition of this witty, tuneful opera. A huge improvement on West Side Story (sorry Nick) but agree with you Nick that opera companies should stage it more frequently... Read more

Great artists/songs/conducting. Candide is a great work and the artists esp. Anderson put on a good example of virtuoso singing. Read more
