Synopsis

Leon (Mark Frankel), a young Jewish Londoner, quits his job at an uncouth real estate firm and begins to work part-time for his mother's catering company. On a delivery to a local sperm bank, he discovers that he is the product of a botched artificial insemination and his father's sperm was confused with that of a northern pig farmer. His family is disconsolate over the news, so Leon decides to go up to Yorkshire to meet his biological dad. The farmer and his wife are thrilled to learn that they have a son; they quickly make an effort to integrate his Jewish culture with their own, learning certain key Yiddish expressions and how to cook kosher food. Even so, Leon does not take easily to farm life. When he mistakenly injects sheep semen into a pig, however, Leon creates a stir by creating what might be the first ever kosher pig. He escapes with the animal to London, where both of his families meet and exchange "cultural dialogue."

5.0 out of 5 stars Puzzling dichotomy, 8 May 2008
I'm fascinated by this film which I caught at the cinema back in the day.
Having thoroughly enjoyed it's joie de vivre I recommended it to a Jewish GP friend who having seen it spat vitriol about it back in my face.

It just seems to be one of those films that splits the audience down the middle and for no reason that I can clearly understand.

Some reviewers claim that only Jews would find it funny but I'm not Jewish and the response of said GP disproves that one.

I simply found it full of hilarious lines and situations, from the piling up of furniture in the bathroom to prevent an unpreventable entrance by the farmer and wife ( who's reactions to finding Leon in the bath are just perfectly understated) to the vegetarian half-brother's culinary ambitions to the telephone conversation about canasta and the discussion about sperm in the front parlour. All of these left me in stitches and still cause me to chuckle now whilst writing this review.

It just goes to show that no film will be perfect for everyone as exemplified by my reaction to the GP's loan of his favourite film - 'Independence Day'. Now there's a pig of a film.

This is an abominably poor film. It has the production values of a Turkey Twizzler. The script has all the charm and entertainment value of a budget speech by Gordon Brown... Read more
