Review

"An elegant book... The illustrations are unsentimental and graceful and the story survives rereading. The last line makes my son smile each time he reads it." The Observer; "A delight... It tackles the subject of imaginary friends with delicacy and respect... The twist at the end is both satisfying and magical. A book to be treasured." Junior Education; "Sunlight shines into all the pictures, creating a feeling that life is good and full of possibilities." The Daily Telegraph; "As always, James has something to say to parents as well as children." Time Out

I was introduced to this by a Primary English lecturer and fell in love with it instantly. It is engaging - both sad and joyful at the same time. As a basis for PSHE or literacy lessons it is terrific - I read it in an assembly that resulted in discussions from Reception to Y6 for 10 minutes. A corker - I have shared it with both my daughters and it remains a persistent favourite.

Format: Hardcover
The delightful story of Leon who, missing his father away in the army, invents an imaginary friend Bob - without giving too much away, the ending will make any reader's heart soar. Our three-year old loves the story, and the illustrations complement the story perfectly.

My three year old takes this a little too literally and thinks Bob is invisible.

It's a story about a lonely boy and his imaginary friend who vanishes when Leon makes a real friend. It's touching and true and very sweet.

My son likes it even without fully understanding it, but we do like all on Simon James' picture books. This one is best off for slightly older than a three year old though.
