THE BARCLAY YEARS, 23 April 2003

This review is from: Leo Chante Ferre (Audio CD)
Excellent résumé of LÉO FERRÉ's greatest years 1960-1974.Some of you out there will be put off by some of the songs in the second cd, because some of those are more like monologue rather than songs, anticipating the latest phase of his career.Mostly ,you'll find here songs with superb lyrics who means something. This is FRENCH poetic music of a superior kind. You won't find in this collection nothing from the records devoted to the FRENCH poets:ARAGON,APOLLINAIRE,BAUDELAIRE,VERLAINE and RIMBAUD.This is LÉO FERRÉ in his own turf and it's wonderful.AVEC LE TEMPS is often considered to be his greatest song. It is actually about the failure of his relation with his second wife.It was recorded by many other artists afterwards;PÉPÉE is about a chimpanzé(no it's not a joke);JOLIE MOME is an archetypical song from the early sixties with musette overtones. While there was a LÉO FERRÉ before and after that collection(the latter being hermetic),there is a conscencious among the fans that this collection represents the artist in full maturity. So you may not enjoy everything here, but often the best will simply overwheilm the rest. There are shades of greatness present to be sure.

Leo ferre was a genius composer, his music is very powerful ,and could be overwelming like a giant wave, some of his songs sound like classical music .The # 1 cd reflect the songs that he did early in his career,The time of Saint Germain des Pres,le quartier latin, les artistes ,les peintres, the night club, and Paris going crazy.Like "Paname" is slang for Paris, beautiful sensual song,"Mister Georgina" very sofisticated song,"Jolie Mome",story of a Titi parisienne,"Comme a Ostende" very poetique. The #2 cd,was the begining of a love affair with the youths of the sixties, mix of protest songs without limits in the lyrics ,like "NI Dieu ni maitre"(No god no master),or"Poetes vos papiers","Les anarchiste"song that he sang every years at a meeting of The french anarchist mouvement, with the public trowing stuff like tomatoes at him, since in their eyes he was sold to the "Capital" by his succes, but he will come back every year and do it again. Ferre was capable of very touching song like "Pepee" a female chimp that was part of his family," ,"Avec le temps" is a masterpiece, probably one of the best french song ever ,full of tenderness, his lyrics are poems, and his interpretation is like nobody else before him or after for that matter.I saw Leo Ferre in concert in the early seventies, and listening to his albums bring back the concert to me.Like Georges Brassens another "Poet singer",he 'll not salute the public after he performed a song, and at the end of the concert he will just leave the concert hall. One minute he was here ,a second after he was gone, lolll.I believed that the french speaking people at large are very lucky to have a genius singing in their langage,it's an incredible gift.As for myself after i listen to Leo Ferre,i cannot listen to anything else, because anythin else will be pale in comparaison. If i did not convince you, alors Basta !
