5.0 out of 5 stars Very speedy laptop 6 May 2011
By kenyard
Style Name:Core i5-2410M, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, BT
Well i shopped around before deciding on this laptop.
There is a Lenovo G570 with pretty much the same spec available also from lenovo. I picked this based on the fact this has the 64bit windows.. which i figure future proofs me in terms of upgrading memory if needed.
The processor is the newest available second gen core I5 so its very nice. very speedy laptop as a result.

So starting up. Unlike lots of laptops i have seen nowadays this comes with very little bloatware which i hate as it slows the laptops down.
Only a trial of mcafee comes with it which is handy if you dont know what you are doing - i guess signup to it and it will keep your laptop in shape for the first few months. (Or get eset like me)
Windows goes through the setup with you when you first switch it on. Getting your username and password for the laptop..typical setup stuff.

First Look
Screen - does what its there for. its not a full HD screen but on a 15.6" laptop i didnt want any higher..If you are going for gaming maybe you will want more.. but most laptops nowadays only seem to have this 768p as standard.
Brightness can be adjusted and this is helpful in low or high light situations, where it is still quite clear to see.

Battery life goes between 2-4 hours depending on usage. I generally find myself getting towards the upper echelon of that scale. Though i have run it through only 3-4 times now.. and apparently they get better after the first 10-20 charges.. so it could rise to 4.5 hours.. and even in the short few times iv had it i think there has been an improvement each time.

Keyboard - comes with a numberpad on the RHS. not many laptops have this. the enter key and backspace are somewhat smaller as a result.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great piece of kit 15 July 2011
Style Name:Core i3-2310M, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD
This is a brilliant laptop for the price and is very quick to load. The keyboard is easy to use. I had an Acer Aspire prior to buying this and it is not a patch on the Lenovo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great laptop 26 July 2011
Style Name:Core i3-2310M, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD
This is a great laptop.

I have a Lenovo laptop with work and was impressed by how quietly and coolly it runs so when it came to a new laptop for the family I went with this Lenovo and it is just as efficient and good so far on battery life.

We use the laptop for regular domestic work - emails, web-browsing, word, powerpoint etc.. and it is more than capable - performing tasks quickly and without issues.

The screen is good - a little more reflective than my work Lenovo but not a problem.

Set-up is dead simple and thankfully Lenovo don't seem to populate the laptop with lots of useless 'bloatware'.

Our children really like the fingerprint scanner - it makes a change from typing passwords when logging on/switching sessions.

All in all we're very pleased so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very usable home laptop. Disappointing screen. 24 Aug 2011
Style Name:Core i3-2310M, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD
A decent laptop for the money. As with all Lenovos, the keyboard is excellent. Performance is more than adequate for general home use although it is let down by the hard disk (I have SSDs on my other machines so I'm spoilt). You won't be carrying it around much - it is neither light nor small.

The bloatware supplied with the machine isn't all bad. It includes a power management utility that lets you prevent full battery charges, Fujitsu-style. This is recommended if the machine will spend most of its life on mains power. And the boot optimization utility actually works.

The i3 is a very smart processor choice on paper, but in practice runs hot. This means battery life isn't great and you may end up with sweaty legs. Depending on how you use it of course. The machine is quiet nevertheless.

The biggest disappointment is the screen. It is bad enough that it is glossy, but it also has narrow viewing angles and poor acuity. This isn't because of the low resolution, it's because it's a cheap screen. It means you'll spend a lot of time tilting your head like a chicken while watching a movie to get the right gamma, or squinting at text. On a $330 laptop (I have the AMD version too) this is perfectly acceptable, but maybe not on a $600 laptop.

There are a couple of minor design niggles. The power cable is cheap and doesn't look like it will stand up to a lot of bending. Like the exhaust, the power jack is awkwardly placed. Both are in the underside bevel, so when you put the machine on a soft surface, the weight of the machine is on the none-too-snug power cable, and the exhaust is blocked. The USB ports are way too stiff and the num lock LED looks just like the HDD LED.

The AMD version (B575) runs a lot cooler, though unfortunately not quieter. It is also a lot slower.

Style Name:Core i5-2410M, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, BT|Verified Purchase
At the time of purchase, and writing, this laptop was one of very few to include a new generation (Sandy Bridge) I5 processor. The write ups suggest that this new technology is a significant improvement on previous work. It should also be noted that the laptop price (which seems to have jumped 25 in the week since my purchase) was competitive with other models, many of which were runnning old generation I3, or even older technology.
So, a smart purchase for those who want performance from their chosen processor. You'd be looking at an I7, and a huge price hike to get a better Intel processor.
That's the upside, so is there a downside? Yes, but IMHO they're not unreasonable for the cost. The first thing I noticed is that the finger print reader is very fiddly compared to the one on my old HP model. I probably won't bother with it. How many people will actually care too much?!
Secondly, the screen isn't great. It's gloss finish isn't fantastic in sunlight, and viewing angles are very restricted. Also, the blacks aren't as dark as more expensive screens provide.

The laptop does feature a nice keyboard, with efficient function keys; the lenovo software is efficient, and the sounds produced are pleasing. The machine has a nice profile, with a depth of only 3.5cm. Build quality seems good.

Kenyard's review of this product offers comprehensive specification details, which I won't duplicate. Except to emphasise that it is the 5400rpm hard drive which ties the performance ratings to 5.6.

Overall this is a good quality laptop, whose processor hits the high notes and more than compensates for an unimpressive screen. You could pay 200 less for a significantly lower quality laptop, or 500 more for a top end gaming laptop, but this seems a bargain in the mid-range.
