Product Description

Seven turbulent years in the life of an icon.

John Lennon is one of the most enduring figures in musical and cultural history. One quarter of The Beatles, peace activist, visual artist and author, he was a man whose personal life was never short on drama, intrigue and eventually, conspiracy. Thirty years after his death, Christopher Eccleston stars as the enigmatic musician in a defining period of his life, as he moved from Beatle John to an icon. It covers a period of wildly fluctuating fortunes from 1964 to 1971, a time of worldwide adulation at one extreme, a combination of frustration and despair at the other. From the death of father-figure and manager Brian Epstein, his break-up with first wife Cynthia, his fascinating love affair with Yoko Ono through to his spiralling drug use and decision to leave England for New York, this is the story of one of the 20th century’s most influential artists destroying everything to find himself…

4.0 out of 5 stars The Sins of the Father 30 Jun 2010
By Graham Chapman TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Lennon Naked was shown as part of the fatherhood season and it was that context that made it interesting. Lennon was abandoned by his father and then - sins of the parent visited on the child - abandons Julian. This was the most moving part for me - 'how could you do that?' I shout at the small screen. Sign of a good script, when you shout at the character and this was a beautifully written script. 'If you do you do, if you don't you don't' says the Paul McCartney character. ' Could be a song there,' says the Lennon one. Nice writing.

Christopher Eccleston? What to say? He inhabits the soul of Lennon, not just the white suit. Also thought Christopher Fairbanks does a good Lennon senior. So when Lennon jr plays 'Mother' to his father, in the spirit of revenge, everything comes together - the two good actors, the dark-humoured dialogue. A real pleasure.

2 quibbles - Yoko - not enough lines and Paul McCartney. Who the hell is that actor? Like some shuffling, incoherent Brit pop star from the mid 90s. Also, though I'm as pro-Lennon as the next Beatles fan, McCartney was not the thick headed bozo this script makes him out to be. After all he and John were friends and artistic partners for a decade. Give both men a bit more credit.

But for everything else, good work. If you missed it, worth buying. (Some of the music isn't too bad either).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD 7 Aug 2010
By Didixx
Format:DVD
I really enjoyed this product and glad I bought it.
However the change of music at the start from Come Together to something different was a bit disapointing. However It wouldn't put me off buying this product. Christopher Eccleston and Naoko Mori are brilliant and have great chemistry which makes the story entertaining and emotional. Definetly one to buy :).

4.0 out of 5 stars A moving drama 4 Aug 2010
Format:DVD
This was a very good and moving piece of drama. Charting John Lennon's life from 1967 to 1971 and his exodus from the UK Lennon Naked was a moving and thought provoking piece that made you look at him as a person rather than as just a musical icon. Made you look at him as a person with faults and human foibles; watching as he repeated the mistakes of his father with his own son.
Christopher Eccleston was a joy to watch and despite the accent seeming out of place he held it very well and there wasn't a moment that you doubted who he was playing. The interaction with his father, Christopher Fairbanks, was the highlight, the father/son relationship or lack thereof being the whole drive behind the film.
As to Christopher Ecclestone's age, as previously mentioned in a few other reviews, it doesn't show that much or take away from a sterling performance.
The cut-away dream like scenes that run throughout and become more apparent as the film runs it course give you an understanding of Lennon's motivation throughout.
It also makes the film look pretty damn good too. And the music through out, snippets of The Beatles and John Lennon's own works, are as brilliant as ever they were.
Basically, if you have an interest in the Beatles or just have a passing interest in John Lennon wondering what all the fuss was about then give this film a view.

A brilliant screenplay, well acted and informative, with not too much fictional material in my view. Well worth the money as it kept my wife spellbound.

An authentic retelling of a great period of John Lennon's life.

It's worth it alone for the performances of Christopher Eccleston and the beautiful Naoko Mori.
