When The Beatles split up in 1970, John Lennon found himself carrying the weight of public adoration and expectation, as the break-up of the world’s most influential band left a hole at the centre of popular culture that he was expected to fill. Leaving his native Britain in 1971, he travelled – as so many had before him – to the city of New York for the chance of a new life. As with so many immigrants to the Big Apple, Lennon sought freedom: freedom to be himself, to leave the Beatles behind and to live his life as a husband, father and artist.

This feature-length documentary, produced with complete support from Yoko Ono, tells the definitive story of Lennon’s solo career and the artistic choices he made in his new adopted city. Featuring access to never-before-seen material from the Lennon archives, rare recordings of some of his greatest solo hits and interviews with the likes of Yoko Ono, Elton John and Ringo Starr, this is the ultimate portrait of John Lennon in his post-Beatle years.

• This intimate, feature-length film includes interviews and footage of Lennon that has never before been publicly seen.

• Contains newly recorded interviews with Yoko Ono, Elton John, David Geffen and many others.

• Features rare recordings of classic solo material including Mind Games, Whatever Gets You Thru The Night and the timeless classic Imagine.

To say that John Lennon was once a member of a successful band is probably one of the biggest understatements you could make, but after the Beatles, Lennon remained part of a cultural revolution through his political activism. But trying to gain permanent citizenship in a country where his voice was seen as a threat to national security was always going to make things tricky...

My teenage years in the '90s were spent discovering the Beatles, and John Lennon was my idol. I read every biography I could find and bought countless documentary videos (most of which were pretty ropey) and now in my thirties I find myself less obsessed but still interested in a man who died the year I was born. This documentary covers the years after the Beatles when John travelled to America. After suffering from constant intrusions into his privacy by the press and hurtful attacks on Yoko Ono - it was only natural that Lennon would love New York City, a place where he could go to shopping without being hassled. Following years of superstardom he finally experienced a sense of normality.

This film details events from the 1970s using interviews with key people from John's life, including some excellent insights from Yoko Ono who is very open and articulate about their time together. I've often thought the unkind comments about Yoko to be unwarranted and here she dispels any preconceptions that she is a cold widower by coming across as warm and direct while speaking fondly of John. It's great to see so many interviews with John himself too, Lennon's music has always been brutally honest, from the desperation of Help! to the public apology of Woman, and his interviews are no different.

Another absolutely brilliant Lennon Documentry. Such a change to see and hear about John Lennons life in the United States and to hear interviews with his friends and former musicians. This DVD tells the viewer not just about the musical genius and peace campaigner but follows his struggle to deal with his anger, his marriage to Yoko Ono and the legal fight to stay in New York after the attempts to deport him. Excellent viewing for anyone interested in the life of this 20th Century Icon.

Encouraged by the other reviews I purchased the dvd. I'm glad I did. The film gives a wide insight to Lennon's US years that other productions lack. I especially enjoyed the contributions from Elephants Memory band members and the footage of Lennon's association with the band. The climax of the presentation leaves one - as with similar documentaries about Lennon's substantial life - feeling desparately baffled by the pointlessness of his death at the callous hands of a deranged article not worth naming.

I thought I had every piece of film of the great man, but there are some bits on here that I didn't. I also learned a few things about the recording sessions of his last 2 albums. Having it on blue ray made it even more precious.

Excellent DVD. Contains info/footage I'd not seen before. The legend lives on through films like this and this DVD is definitely one of the best.

A very good account of Lennon in New York, loads of unseen interviews and film(to me,anyway),doesn't just focus on the music,a lot more of him being "a normal bloke" just trying to live his life,Beatles/Lennon fans will love this.

This is the best film I have seen about John.

This is no objective critique and I'm sure that,in time, that will come. The studio musicians who worked on Double Fantasy are charming as are the guys in Elephant's Memory.Their recollections are fitting if a little tempered by sentimentality.

Yoko is honest and charming,as usual.

Personally,I think that after Plastic One Band(the 1st post-Beatles album),Walls and Bridges is his best.

However, this film gives a very sound reading of Lennon's life and music after the Beatles had ended.
