Product Description

Product Description

The story is told chronologically, starting with their first work outside The Beatles: McCartney's soundtrack for "The Family Way" film and Lennon's "Unfinished Music Number 1: Two Virgins" with Yoko Ono. The book details Lennon and McCartney's creative highs and lows in an authoritative, complete, and engagingly critical fashion. Information for collectors includes release dates, catalogue numbers, composer credits, recording personnel, recording studio, and producer credits, and there is a keyed index to help trace each song and the albums it appears on. Blaney's perceptive style makes this a fascinating read as well as a work of reference, and the book includes illuminating archive quotes from Lennon, McCartney, and others. "Together Alone" tells the stories behind the songs of two giants of modern music.

Yes definitely 4 Jan 2010
By Richard
Format:Paperback
With over 1000 books about the Beatles here's one about just two of them- Lennon & McCartney as solo artists in their own right.
It begins with McCartney's first extra curricular activity while he was a Beatles, followed by Lennon's Outsider music before touching the first actual solo albums and goes up to McCartney's Chaos & Creation.
The appendixes list all the sessions that either Beatles was involved with such as McCartney's strong input on the McGEAR album.
Its thus a factual book rather than opininated and all the better for it.
Whether George & Ringo will follow is a possibility but whatever this book has meant a huge amount of work
And the sleeve photo has to be mentioned-a very clever idea of half Paul & half John

Is there room for yet another book on The Beatles? Probably not, but then again this is a book detailing the solo work of Lennon and McCartney, and with their plethora of post Fabs output, there has been a need for a critical disection for some time. Beginning with McCartney's first solo project, 'Love In The Open Air', and running through to 'Ecce Cor Meum' from September 2006, author John Blaney tries to examine the undoubted highs as well as the embarrassing lows.

Each release has enough in-depth commentary to keep the most rabid of fans happy and for those who want to seek out any missing gaps in their collection, some extra data is available: for all you record fair enthusiasts, McCartney's 'Figure of Eight' was issued in eight configurations.

Whilst Blaney's opinions on the songs may not meet your own, remember that's exactly what they are. Read past that and you'll discover things you never knew. How many have seen the incredibly hard to find 'Give Peace A Chance/Cold Turkey' single on a shortlived golden oldies reissue campaign from EMI. (Apple G45 is the catalogue number for those looking out.)

This book is a good companion to the two Lewisohn epics and Ritchie Unterberger's 'The Unreleased Beatles'. Let's hope Blaney follows this up with a George and Ringo appraisal. It's a pity the cover photo has Lennon and McCartney the wrong way round.
