This is a book looking back at the East End of London during the lifespan of Len Goodman - he of Strictly Come Dancing Fame. This primarily covers 1950s and 60s London and how things have changed. There is a bit of history thrown in for good measure which I found particularly interesting such as the origins of the Pearly Kings and Queens and words such as Costermongers.
Despite the title, there is little of the life story of Len Goodman in this book. Don't read this book expecting an autobiography as you just won't find it. The book is pictures of London with some explanatory text covering Len's era. There is only basic information and memories concerning him.
The real treasure in this book are the photos. There are plenty of photos showing London after the blitz with the bomb damage and how it became vibrant again with music and dancing. There is plenty about the markets such as Billingsgate, how they developed and have now expanded. The photos are wonderful and although I enjoyed the text, I could quite happily have dipped in and out of the pictures totally omitting the text.
Although not a Londoner myself I very much enjoyed this book. I suspect that someone of Len's generation from a similar area would very much enjoy the trip down memory lane.
An ideal book for a brief social history & to glance at the photos. It would also be an ideal addition to a collection on the history of the area as there are so many lovely pictures, some personal to Len Goodman.
