Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Philoctetes TOP 500 REVIEWER on 7 Aug. 2009
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
If you're hesitating before attempting the mammoth Leifs - Edda, Part 1, this CD will make an outstanding intro to Jon Leifs' hair-raisingly powerful, highly expressive vocal music. In addition to the wonderful Iceland Cantata there is the eerily "necromantic" (is that a neologism I can claim?)Lay Of Helgi The Hunding-Slayer, before the uncompromisingly mesmeric Groa's Spell. Viking's Answer makes a suitable curtain raiser.

It is the last four patriotic items on the disc that make Leifs' status as the icon of Icelandic classical music readily apparent. You can listen and see (and feel) the biting freshness of the land, it's harsh vitality. The wide open spaces, green oases, jagged rocks and perilous mountains, all conjured in unprecedented, visionary music for choir and orchestra.

Like a cold plunge. Jump in. You'll feel better for it.

Update (11/2013): the trumpets resound for Jonas. Groa gives out her spell in a ring of thunder. Pale cliffs rise from the mists on the water. Come wind, rain, lightning or hot lava, the spirit is indomitable.
