I was attracted to this book because a friend of mine had walked entirely around Britain about ten years ago. My friend's stories about the people he met and the experiences he enjoyed never failed to amuse and enlighten me. Gary Lamb's walk was for a different purpose, and I wondered how the Lord had ordered Mr. Lamb's steps. The resulting book makes for a moving testimony to the power and goodness of the Lord Jesus in our lives.
After avoiding God as best he could and living in rebellion, Mr. Lamb found that the Lord had his eyes on him. Finally repenting and committing his life to follow Him, Mr. Lamb was astonished to hear a voice tell him, "Gary, I want you to talk around Britain." More verbal directions came later.
Many people respond to such stories wondering if the teller is a schizophrenic . . . or merely hearing his own mind's voice. I get those verbal orders, too, for Christian tasks that are expressed in a voice that isn't the same as any I've heard before so I take the stories seriously.
With the help of his local church, Mr. Lamb organized to spend almost a year walking around the outer edge of Britain carrying a heavy pack over 4,500 miles. In the process, he experienced the expected annoyances . . . getting lost, being stuck in the rain, having problems with boots and equipment, running into unfriendly dogs, and needing a bathroom where none existed.
More importantly, he gained a deeper personal relationship with God so that he was continually praying while walking . . . hours and hours a day. In addition, the Lord sent him people to pray for, to minister to, and to encourage. People who heard about his walk, who joined him on the walk, who met him, or who hosted an overnight stay in a guest bedroom found their lives changed for the better as well. In particular, the Lord often sent Mr. Lamb as a sign to someone who needed a little more faith.
I don't know Great Britain very well so a lot of the detailed description of one area versus another was lost on me. As a result, I found the book becoming much more interesting beginning in Chapter 5 where he describes events during the walk that seemed to have been directed from above. Unless you want the entire travelogue, you might want to skip from the end of Chapter 1 to the beginning of Chapter 5 and then continue on to the end. If at that point you want an overview, go back and read chapters 2 through 4. Don't miss the appendix where the people who walked along with him describe the experience.
It's easy for forget that in promising to follow Him we have given over our entire lives to serve and honor the Lord. Legs of Lamb will be a wake-up call to those who aren't actively serving the Lord to re-direct their lives. He has good things waiting for you, I'm sure, as he did for Mr. Lamb.
May God bless you, your family, and all you do in the name of Jesus!
